Discovering Uses for "junk" DNA* |
Discovering Uses for "junk" DNA*
With all the flurry of a side show the evolutionary religionists declared
that DNA contains up to 98% "junk" which they call leftovers from pond
scum to people evolution. Recent findings have shown that this "junk" DNA
is absolutly esssential for the operation of the organism. This "junk DNA
regulates and structures the genes and allows for correct splicing of
exons. It also prevents damage to the introns which can be
disastrous(mutations). For example, deleting four "letters" in the center
of an intron, preventing the spliceosome from binding to it, results in
the intron being included where it will do harm to the organism. These
mutations in introns interfere with imprinting, the process by which only
certain maternal or paternal genes are expressed but not both. These
expressions of both genes result in a variety of diseases and cancers.
Once again the only "junk" appears to be in the minds of the
pseudo-scientists and their lackys claiming that they are the only ones
qualified to be the high priests of evolutionary religion and thus of all
thought.
That seems to be the trouble with these folks-they can't see, probably
because somehow their eyes have not yet fully evolved...

Discovering Uses for "junk" DNA*
One evolutionary use may be similar to the way we use junk yards in real
life. Most of the old junk just sits there until it is melted down and
reused as new parts or a new use for an old part might be found. Having this
huge pile of junk DNA could be advantageous in that it might mutate into
something that would give an animal an advantage to survive when climate or
other changes affect the earth. It might be to harder for a cell to create a
new gene from scratch rather then from an existing unused gene.

I had actually been assuming (without researching the issue) that this was
the thinking among geneticists. One would think that in the absence of some
advantage to retaining "junk" DNA that an organism would do well to jettison
what must otherwise be a rather expensive set of extra bags to tote around.
It would seem to be very hard to get at this experimentally, but I'm sure
there is something to it.
You know the literature, Lane, someone must have published something on
this?

It might be too early to tell, one thing that will help is when the
genome of several other animals is finished we will be able to compare ours
with theirs as right now were sort of blind to the evolutionary aspects of
all this unused DNA. Whether this is expensive baggage or not might not make
a difference if the DNA is near impossible to remove.

Part of the "junk" DNA is used as replacement parts for coding DNA that gets
damaged or broken. There appears to be a repair mechanism in place to
replace such breaks and prevent the otherwise subsequent cell death. Errors
in replacement are being looked at currently as the possible source of
certain cancers. It is thought that some replacement errors might give rise
to inheritable changes.
Certainly we have seen the result of genetic problems in human children. But
this does not mean that other, more beneficial changes are not also taking
place. We can't see many of them if we don't know what to look for.
In any case, the creationist argument that "junk" DNA is not all "junk" does
not really bolster their arguments against evolution. While creationists
pretend that there is no real research going on in the field, such research
is being actively and enthusiastically pursued in the scientific community.
Finding out a function for what we did not know will not undo all of the
other evidences of evolution.

Billions of dollars are being spent on DNA research in the US alone and
it will probably be the most dominant scientific project this century. The
rewards of just being able to cure genetic disease such as cystic fibrosis
alone would save billions in medical care each year.
We might also need to create new plants and animals that produce yields
at two to three times what were seeing now as farm land shrinks to
accommodate an ever growing population.
Exciting times for DNA researchers and the fact that it will help explain
evolutionary theory is just icing on the cake. Its just a shame that
creationist want to do away with this type of research for their own
religious beliefs. The lessons of the polio epidemic seem to be fading from
many peoples memory.

We save our junk DNA. I mix it in with my Carnation Instant Breakfast every

Nature is the canvas of creation and evolution but one of
the brushes. Religion points to the mind of God; Science
reveals its unfolding. The subjective apprehends knowledge

In all things, yin and yang - ever flowing, one into the

Substitute brains for eyes and you're talking about yourself again.
UNWRITTEN RULES OF FUNDAMENTALISM
1. "I'm right and you are wrong".
2. Never admit that you are wrong, even if you really are.
3. When you have nothing to say, hurl insults.
4. Regard and portray your own violence, whether physical,
psychological,
or verbal, at all times as defensive
5. Be prepared at all times to lie and bluster, particularly when backed
into a corner in an argument
6. Never accept responsibility for any mess you have personally caused.
7. When you are forced to admit to an error, regard the whole process of
error and correction as part of God's personal plan for you and not as a
something for which you should apologise retract or make amends except
verbally and secretly to God himself
8. Always see yourself and you personal actions as part of God's plans
for
the world. Recognise that even your errors are just part of Gods will
for
the betterment of mankind.
9.Profess humility but avoid the actual experience of it.
10.Refuse to take in information that differs from your own view and
oppose all such information through classification of such information
in
a derogatory and simplistic manner(eg by categorising it as left wing
propaganda)
11.Refuse to accept that truth is not black and white; that reality is
complex and there are shades of grey
12.Refuse to forgive anyone else for anything unless you purport to
forgive on behalf of other people unconnected with you for whom you
don't
have that right anyhow.

Let's have a look at your beliefs:
http://hyboria.xoth.net/races/human_aesir.htm
Only by dying in battle, with sword or axe in hand and courage in the
heart,
can an Aesir find his way to Valhalla, the after-life paradise sought by
all
Norsemen.
The Aesir live by conquest. When two Aesir fight, the winner takes his
choice of the loser's women, children, and animals. Aesir men will have
only
one wife at a time. When they tire of their present wife they either kill
or
sell her, and obtain a new female more to their liking. If a woman is
unfaithful to her Aesir husband, she is most often killed by a ritual
called
"the Wheel of Axes", where all who disbelieve her hurl axes at her bound
body. Any man caught in adultery is stripped of his belongings, and forced
to cross the snow plains naked. In this way he freezes to death and never
gains his chance to reside in the Halls of Valhalla. Only a legitimate
wife
can commit adultery, and thus an Aesir man can be frivolous with as many
unmarried women as he wishes.

Dont really matter. 98% junk is theory and may or may not mean majority
accept it...
Also, junk is important in determining evolutional history since they change
without impact on survival.
So it is USEFUL junk, no matter what 8-)
