Does God Exist? |
The problem here is that it's a loop. You either assume it is not
fictitious, and become a believer because once you assume that "x=true" for
whatever x is, you're a believer and perfect fodder for religion or Internet
Nazism.
If you do not believe, you have assumed it is either fictitious or not
relevant, and my preference is for the latter. Religion is something like
the SCA, drugs, Civil War reenactment, charades, mimes, and so forth. It is
another world for people to play in. But should our leaders be spouting this
stuff? And our schools, ideologies, and values founded upon it?

While I agree with your post here, I couldn't disagree more with the
general beliefs of the people who frequent the *****.com forums. Those
folks are more irrational than theists, even, and they have no
conception whatsoever of rational ethics or the meaning of morality.
They seem to find the greatest good in discarding any rational
guidelines to which they ought to adhere, and the result, were most
humans this type of people, would be similar to what happens when the
technicians in a nuclear power station decide to wantonly discard all
rules.
Nihilism is the other extreme from theism, and is even more potentially
destructive.
