Evangelical leader quits amid sex probe
By CATHERINE TSAI, Associated Press Writer
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The leader of the influential National
Association of Evangelicals, a vocal opponent of the drive for
same-sex marriage, resigned Thursday after being accused of paying for
sex with a man.
The Rev. Ted Haggard also stepped aside as head of his 14,000-member
New Life Church while a church panel investigates, saying he could
"not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations."
The investigation came after a 49-year-old man told a Denver radio
station that Haggard paid him to have sex.
Haggard, a married father of five, denied the allegations in an
interview with KUSA-TV late Wednesday: "Never had a gay relationship
with anybody, and I'm steady with my wife, I'm faithful to my wife."
In a written statement, Haggard said: "I am voluntarily stepping aside
from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed
with integrity. I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more
detail at a later date. In the interim, I will seek both spiritual
advice and guidance."
Mike Jones, 49, told The Associated Press that Haggard paid him to
have sex nearly every month for three years. His allegations were
first aired on KHOW-AM in Denver.
Jones said that he had advertised himself as an escort on the Internet
and that a man who called himself Art contacted him. Jones said he
later saw the man on television identified as Haggard.
He said that he last had sex with Haggard in August and that he did
not warn him before making his allegations this week.
Jones said he has voice mail messages from Haggard, as well as an
envelope he said Haggard used to mail him cash, though he declined to
make any of it available to the AP.
"There's some stuff on there (the voice mails) that's pretty damning,"
he said.

No, certainly not all of them. The ones to watch out for are the
the kind who preach the "fire and brimstone" stuff.

when one MUST be dishonest about themselves to be a member of any cult,
we will witness these bizarre twists of faith and tortured stories.
when we can be honest about ourselves and when all are given the
respect needed to find ourselves we will not see such sandals. for the
scandal is built on the premise of the perfect man, men achieving
perfection in a cookie cutter society of perfect people judging others
for jesus love.
it is the big lie in religion that one must be perfect to be apart of
the search for perfection. yes a concept of perfect of ourselves will
always be part of our spiritual goal and a necessary ingrient of our
soul searching machine. just, when people are encouraged to be
themselves there will be no disappointment on these matters. when
people have to hide their realness, their discovered identity we see
such deceptions grow as everyone in these groups have to deceive each
other to be on the same playing field.
love and we encourage love, hate and we encourage dishonesty and a lack
of candor about ourselves while attacking others for the same
picadillos some religious among us would call sins.
merlin can only encourage honesty and non-judgemental acceptance of
everyone round us. and merlin isn't even talking about love, which
unless laid over everything leads to defeat every time. come honest in
your dealings with others, be honest in your dealing with yourself.
then when you find love, it might for real.
in love,
merlin

it is the big lie in religion that one must be perfect to be apart of

You miss the point of the scandal. The point of the scandal
is not THIS incedent. Nor is it about sex, -- it's much
bigger and broader than that. The sad thing is; it's
seemingly ONLY SEX that pulls Christian's head out of the
sand.
The point of the scandal is a PATTERN that shows as
plainly as daylight that the Republican party has become the
Party of sleaze and unmentionable sin, everything from
institutionalized torture to institutionalized slander to
barbed wire forced-abortion sweatshops, to ignoring the
Supreme court regarding torture, to ignoring a federal judge
regarding warentless wiretaps, to institutionalized stealing
from the poor to give to the rich, to ...dam it! more damed
filth than I can think of.
And these filthy new Republicans are feeding directly off
Christians, and the Christians are so willfully ignorant of
all of this, that they dont even know enough to turn the
other cheek. [spit]

<snip>
There are some people who just want to be members of a group so that
they can enjoy a life that is not so lonely as living the life of a
hermit.
In order to be accepted into the group they have to profess and
pretend to believe in all of the group's stated beliefs and principles,
all of them, even the ones in which they do not truly believe. So
they join the group and they pretend to subscribe to everything in
the group's stated beliefs and principles. For some people, living the
life of a well-liked and very sociable hypocrite is better than living
the life of a lonely hermit. For some people becoming a hypocrite can
fulfill their inner need to feel that they are just like a lot of
other people.
