back to every voter with details of who got it. Then a voter can check

ensure that his vote went where he expected.
The number can be any random number alloted to the voter printed and

to the voter by the machine when the vote is completed. Or the voter can
record the number and check later on a local screen even.. But the hard
copy
confirms validity.
This allows an accurate check back with only the voter knowing how to
check
to see where his/her vote went. Or leave with the scrutineers to check?
Also a final record board on the internet where vote records end up so
that
scrutineers can make sure the final main board record matches the hard
copy?
It should, but, in too many cases, it doesn't.
