Fool Or Foolish Words? A Biblical Examination Of Matthew 5:22 |
FOOL OR FOOLISH WORDS?
A BIBLICAL EXAMINATION OF MATTHEW 5:22
by Carl McCaskey
One day, Steve Winter addressed a Christian thusly:
SW> Wow, aren't you a filthy lowlife scum. You are also a fool.
It is interesting that one who professes to be a "Reverend" and whom claims
that complete obedience to the Bible is the pathway to salvation keeps
picking and choosing which verses he will or will not follow. In regards to
Steve calling a Christian a "fool" I am reminded of the following verse:
"But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother
will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his
brother "Raca" is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone
who says, "You fool!" will be in danger of the fires of
hell." (Matthew 5:22, NIV)
CLARIFICATION OF MATTHEW 5:22
I was drawn to examine and study this verse in order to properly understand
it in obedience to scripture (2 Timothy 2:15). I found this to be a verse
that is highly misunderstood by Christians and critics alike. In fact it was
due a controversial subject completely unrelated to Steve Winter that led me
to discover what this verse is all about. Many people, especially those who
adhere to the KJV translation only, have misinterpreted this scripture
mainly because of the apparent ambiguity of certain key words. Here is how
the KJV translates the verse:
"But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his
brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:
and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in
danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool,
shall be in danger of hell fire." (Matthew 5:22, KJV)
The main point of misunderstanding comes from the erroneous contention that
this verse is speaking of Godly judgment only, when in fact, is referring to
three separate forms of judgment.
First, when this verse refers to "the judgment" it is referring to a local
tribunal (which basically is a minor court of judgment) made up of elders
who were in charge of settling local disputes (Jesus gives a specific
example in terms of being angry with another person without cause as
determined by that local tribunal's judgment). Therefore, upon close
examination, this first judgment is of man, not God and that tribunal is the
one responsible in determining if one's anger is or isn't "without a
cause."
Secondly, when the KJV translation refers to "the council" in this verse,
the reference is actually to the Sanhedrin (the NIV translation makes this
clearer). The Sanhedrin, according to Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old
and New Testament Words was:
"...the Great Council of Jerusalem consisting of 71 members,
namely, prominent members of the families of the high
priest, elders and scribes. The Jews trace the origin of
this to Num. 11:16. The more important causes came up before
this tribunal. The Roman rules of Judea permitted the
Sanhedrin to try such cases, and even to pronounce sentence
of death, with the condition that such a sentence should be
valid only confirmed by the Roman procurator."
[NOTE: The NASB uses the term "supreme court" as another proper reference to
the Sanhedrin in regards to it being a higher place of judgment than the
tribunal.]
To illustrate, Jesus mentions the cursing of another with the insult "Raca"
which is equivalent to accusing someone of being "empty-headed." This was
considered a very major insult according to Jewish law and custom.
Furthermore, it was considered a worse transgression than merely to be angry
with another. However, the judgment here was still man's.
Finally, after Jesus makes the two escalating points concerning man's
judgments, He properly points out that one can even go further than losing
one's life (this is consistent with His further teachings in Matthew 10:28)
by calling someone a "fool." Calling someone a "fool" was considered to be
the supreme curse and was worse than being angry and calling someone else
"empty-headed" (i.e. - "Raca"). According to Vine's this word "fool" is
rendered rightly in Matthew 5:22 as meaning:
"morally worthless, a scoundrel, a more serious reproach
than `Raca.' This curse scorns a man's heart and character;
hence the Lord's more severe condemnation."
Furthermore, Jesus clearly teaches that if one curses another by calling
them a "fool" they run the risk of having their soul thrown into the fires
of hell.
Therefore, with a clearer understanding of this verse, it becomes readily
apparent that Jesus is warning those He is addressing that the escalating
forms of judgments does not end with man's judgment, but one's actions can
be severe enough to jeopardize one's soul. His illustration is to call
someone a "fool."

SO WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH STEVE WINTER?
Steve believes that to obtain salvation, one must be completely obedient to
the Bible. He is very sincere in this belief and has stated it on numerous
occasions. He has also stated his belief that what is written in the Bible
is the absolute truth and applies to Christians today.
Since Steve truly believes these two points then doesn't he also believe
that calling someone a "fool" places his soul in the danger of being cast
into the fires of hell? Or is this merely another example of Steve's supreme
hypocrisy in which he declares himself exempt of scripture while still
firmly contending that everyone else is held to Biblical requirements?
I remind you of Steve Winter's own words to a Christian:
SW> Wow, aren't you a filthy lowlife scum. You are also a fool.
Is Steve jeopardizing his soul by cursing Christians with the insult "fool"?
According to Jesus, he is.
Is Steve a hypocrite for demanding of others complete obedience to the Bible
when he shows himself to be unable to maintain such a high standard?
According to Jesus, he is.
Obviously since we are all sinners who fall short of the glory of God (Roman
3:23), no one can live a perfect life and anyone who claims they do not sin
is a liar (1 John 1:10). Therefore it becomes apparent that to teach the
doctrine that complete obedience to the Bible brings salvation is obviously
a false doctrine for according to scripture it is faith through Christ that
brings salvation. And it is a _result_ of this saving faith that one strives
for a more Christlike life and attempts to be obedient to scripture.
However, such perfection is impossible in this earthly kingdom, but is
promised when the saved inherit the kingdom of God.
BOTTOM LINE
This unChristian action of Steve Winter merely illustrates yet another area
in which Steve demonstrates that he does not show the fruit of the Spirit
(Matt. 7:16, 20). This also shows another example of Steve Winter's
hypocrisy and unrepentant sinful behavior as well as his false teachings.
According to scripture, Christians are to mark those who teach things
contrary to scripture as Steve does and avoid them (Romans 16:17). We are
also taught to refute false doctrine by being equipped with the armor of God
(Ephesians 6:10-18).
May God bless you and keep you always,
Carl

You filthy false-christian dirt are no brother to any real
Christian!!!
Carl Mccaskey and scum like him are Biblically "non-believers".
We can know this because of their refusal to obey the Acts 2:38
Gospel that the Apostles preached. (now some scum like Charles
Stanley and Stephen Adams will lie and claim to have obeyed it,
but what they did was redefine it to fit the polytheistic garbage
they peddle.)
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias
saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
See, Carl Mccaskey and these other trinity scum really are
"non-believers"!

Deceiver Steve,
Quoting you:
You filthy false-christian dirt are no brother to any real
Christian!!!
I suppose you think you are a real Christian. You are not, because
you do not love. So don't be offended by anything said to Christians.
A Christian is a disciple of Christ and a disciple of Christ loves one
another.
Act 11:26 KJV
And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to
pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and
taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in
Antioch.
Joh 13:35 KJV
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love
one to another.

Bible Bob <biblebob@saintly.com> spake thusly and wrote:
I suppose you think you are a real Christian. You are not, because
you do not love.
I love my neighbor enough to come against Satanic false-christian
scum like Robert Sowle or Carl Mccaskey who labor to deceive my
neighbor into hell.
I even love my enemies enough to come against Satanic
false-christian scum like Robert Sowle or Carl Mccaskey who labor
to deceive my enemies into hell.
Robert Sowle is the scum who has shared with us his sexual lust
for little children. Robert Sowle has revealed many personal
things about himself during the course of his malicious false
accusations including his lust for little children.
So far the filthy devil scum Robert Sowle has shared with us that
he thinks everyone would find child porn enjoyable!
Robert Sowle also shared with us how he had to go check his
computer to make sure it didn't have any child porn on it (when
he was accused by the sick nut Wolf).
Let's revisit some of Robert Sowle telling us about himself and
his secret (well not so secret now) lust for children:
Bible Bob <biblebob@saintly.com> spake thusly and wrote:
How does looking at naked little girls and
boys make you feel? Good, I bet.
[[ End of quote from Robert Sowle ]]
Robert Sowle reveals much here about his sexual lust for
children!
Bible Bob <biblebob@saintly.com> spake thusly and wrote:
because I know just like
everyone else knows that child molesters enjoy what they do.
[[ End of quote from Robert Sowle ]]
How does Robert Sowle know so much about what child molesters
enjoy? Why would Robert Sowle believe that everyone would take
something like that for granted? Robert Sowle reveals much about
his sexual lust for children, eh?
REMEMBER, this low life scum Robert Sowle has repeatedly stated
that he "works with children"!
Is Robert Sowle to be trusted around children? Are parents in
Charlotte, NC still trusting Robert Sowle around their children?
Isn't it fascinating the level of scum who would support a devil
like Carl Mccaskey!
