Object: Gabriel questions God on climate change
'Hello, my Lord,' said Gabriel, approaching God. God wanted to pretend that
he hadn't seen him coming, as he always asked such foolish questions, but
being all-knowing he was forced to see him coming and knew just what he was
going to say.
'You know what I am going to say,' said Gabriel, 'But I will ask anyway. We
know that human beings are going to mess up their planet and will probably
be wiped out as a species along with lots of other more innocent creatures,
but once the humans have gone, is it worth continuing with Earth? I read in
a book...'
'What do you mean, 'book'?' asked God sternly.
'I read a book in a library on a recent visit to Earth,' explained Gabriel.
'Don't believe everything you read in books,' warned God. 'I am the true
light and I will tell you all you need to know.'
'At least that makes me feel better than the humans, then, ' said Gabriel.
'I mean, You don't tell them anything do you, like warnings of bad weather,
earthquakes or pestilences... It's like those reality shows I see on the
television where people have to survive on a desert island...'
'Stick to your point, Gabriel, said God. He was getting a bit tired of
Gabriel asking questions.
'Right then,' said Gabriel. 'I understand that in billions of years the sun
will swell to a great size and envelope the Earth. If humans have
disappeared billions of years before then, is it really worth continuing
with Earth for all that time? Won't it be quicker just to cancel the whole
project and starting something new?'
'You'll just have to wait and find out,' said God. 'I am not an information
desk.'
Gabriel was shocked: He was being treated like a human, being told next to
nothing. And what a long wait! He wondered what he would be doing in
billions of years time. it seemed an eternity. And hadn't God just told
him a fib when he said he would tell all he knew?
