A TIME FOR THANKSGIVING
Genuine thanksgiving is an act God commends
To Read: Haggai 1.2
To Know:
".give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ
Jesus for you." (1 Thess. 5:18)
Thanksgiving is woven into the fabric of American life. Celebrating our
national Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November was Lincoln's
doing. Before the 19th century, the governors of the separate states
appointed thanksgiving days at will.
Thanksgiving goes back to early Bible times. Thanksgiving is the godly
response to the goodness of God. Giving thanks is one of four marks of a
life that is filled by the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote to the Ephesians, "And do
not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the
Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, always and for
everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the
Father." (Eph. 5:18-20)
Being subject to one another is the fourth mark of the Spirit-filled life.
Those whose hearts are thankful for all God has done in the world and in
their lives will find it in them to submit to God as they meet him in
others.
To Do:
Thanksgiving Day is our most blatantly biblical holiday. Christmas and
Easter are overlaid with a cultural veneer. Christmas trees and Easter
bunnies have nothing to do with the birth of Jesus or his departure from the
tomb. When families gather with the genuine desire to be thankful, it is an
act God commends. Let us be sure to pause and thank God for our bounty this
Thursday.
To Ask:
Father, give me a truly thankful heart.

I agree that Thanksgiving Day is the closest thing Americans have to a
Christian observance.
Although you can find the xmas tree in Jeremiah 10, where did the idea of
Turkeys come from?
