Help when we are slow
To read the Bible in one year, today Read: Revelations 16-18
To Know:
łAll scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof,
for correction and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be
complete, equipped for every good work.˛
(2Tim. 3:16)
On our way to Loch Ness we stopped for lunch in Dumfries. The town had a
museum of local history so we decided to browse through. All was well until
we made the mistake of asking the curator a question. It was a simple
inquiry but the man took the occasion to tell us all he knew about his town.
That on simple question turned us into a captive audience of two. Had the
phone not summoned the gentleman, we might be in Scotland yet.
Does the Bible tell us more than we need to know? It is certainly a big
book. Are the long and involved genealogies really necessary? Do we need to
know about the blood that ran so freely to drive the idolatrous nations out
of the Promised Land? Does the repetition in the books of Chronicles of what
we read in the books of the Kings not waste space: The answer to these and
questions like them is no. It is in the study of those passages that seem
redundant or even repulsive that we often find hidden gems.
To Do:
Twice Ezekiel writes of the danger facing unfaithful watchmen. If a watchman
sees the sword coming but gives no warning to the people that watchman will
have their blood on his head. It was in reading the second passage (Ez.
33:1-4) that I heard God call me to the task of warning sinners to flee to
Christ for safety. For me it proved to be critical to have a second chance
to read what clearly passed by unnoticed when I read Ezekiel 3:16-21.
To Ask:
Father, you have wasted not a word. You are a God who speaks and you know
how to tell us who you are and how we might be declared right in your sight.
We are grateful for taking such great patience with us who are so slow to
hear.
