How a disciple is a learner
To Read: 2 Chronicles 19-21
To Know:
łA disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught
will be like his teacher.˛ (Lk. 6:40)
A disciple is a learner. The Holy Spirit is the teacher in the Christian
Church. About 1806 the first female seminary in Massachusetts opened in
Byfield. From 1818 to 1821, the Rev. Joseph Emerson became headmaster and
under his leadership the school flourished. Among others he taught Mrs.
Adonirum Judson (Ann Hazeltine), Miss Zilpah Grant, and Miss Mary Lyon. Mary
Lyon, learning from Emerson, founded a school of her own using financial
scholarships to enable money-less girls to gain a college level education.
Mt. Holyoke College was modeled on the Byfield Seminary because Mary Lyon
became like her teacher.
Jesus is presently calling sinners to receive his spirit. The plan of the
ages is to populate the earth with men and women regenerated in the image of
Christ. For this to happen it is necessary to receive the forgiveness of
sins and a new heart. The Christian life is not grudging obedience to the
law of God. Rather, it is a love for Christ that inspires the faithful to
learn his will and live life as a thank offering to him. Thankfulness filled
the life of Jesus Christ. When we learn him we will thank him in all
circumstances and for all things. This we will do, not because we can
explain the trials of life, nor because we deny our present sufferings, but
because we know him who is Lord of history and believe therefore łthat in
everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called
according to his purpose.˛ (Rm. 8:28)
To Do:
This year our energies will be focused on discipleship. We will seek to
learn from Jesus Christ as never before. We encourage everyone to unite with
one of the smaller groups in the church to participate in this opportunity.
