How Bible Smart Are You? |
My research over the past quarter of a century in the study of figures
of speech used in the Bible has helped me to locate 16,075 figures in
11,582 passages in the 31,101 passages in the Bible. That means that
37.2% of the Bible is marked by figures of speech for emphasis (God's
version of highlighting words). If you do not know how to recognize
the employment of figures of speech in the Bible, then over one-third
of the Bible will not reveal to you all that you could know. Most
people do not know the difference between a Parable and an Allegory,
or the diference between a Simile and a Metaphor. Few people notice
the repetition of words at the beginning of sentences, or in the
middle of sentences or at the end of sentences or at the end of one
sentence and the beginning of the next. These repetitions of words
are God's bold type to cause you to pay attention to what is being
said.
Genesis 1:1 KJV
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 1:2 KJV
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the
face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the
waters.
Do you see the figures of speech used in the above verses? Did you
notice that verse one ends with the words "the earth" and that verse
two begins with the words "and the earth?" What does that tell you?
It is the figure Anadiplosis (Like Sentenced Endings and Beginnings)
which is the repetition of the last words in the first sentence as the
beginning words of the second sentence. What does it do? It tells
you that "the earth" is now the topic and that "the heaven" is no
longer in consideration. What does that tell you? What would it mean
to you if verse two and following speak of the earth and not the
heavens? Well, for one thing it pretty much wipes out the six day
creation theory. Verse one speaks about the heavens and the earth
that was created in the beginning. Verse two begins speaking about
the present earth that was established so that it could be inhabited
during the six day period covered in Genesis one and two. If verse one
is speaking about the former earth and verse two is speaking about the
present earth, what happened to the first earth?
If you want more in depth information on what happened, here are five
chapters that explain what happened in Genesis One through Three. You
can use the link to my free web site or email me and I will send it to
you.
http://www.biblebob.net/Genesis/Genesis%20Index.htm
Do you see the words "without form, and void" in verse two? The
Hebrew reads "tohu va bohu." Notice anything odd about the words?
They rhyme and are marked by the figure Paronomasia (Rhyming Words).
They rhyme because God wanted them to rhyme to cause the reader to
pause and consider the words. They are an important key to
understanding Genesis and the rest of the Bible.
Do you see the word "was" used twice in verse two, once in regular
type and once in italics? Why is the word in italics the second time
and not both times? Because there is no verb "to be" of which "was"
is a form in Hebrew. The italic type tells you that there is al
Ellipsis (Omission) where there is no corresponding word in the
Hebrew. The first "was" should be rendered "became." Read verse one
and two and substitute "became" for the first "was" and see if it
changes your understanding of what happened.
Do you see the word "moved" in verse two? It is translated from a
word that means to "brood" or "hover" like a chicken over its nest of
eggs. Is the Spirit of God a chicken? No, it is not literally true
to fact and ascribes to God what belongs to an animal and is therefore
an Anthromorphic figure that conveys the image of downward pressure
upon the surface of the earth. Apply the rule of cause and effect,
what has to happen to the surface of the earth. If you apply downward
pressure on a ball what happens to the ball? If there is nothing to
prevent its movement it will move to another place rotating as it
goes. What happens when the earth rotates? For one thing gravity
begins to exist and if light is present there will be day and night.
Other figures in verse two are Polysyndeton (Many Ands) and Pleonasm
(Redundancy). Thus in verse two, alone, there are six figures of
speech used. If you go to the following link you can view my work in
progress called the Finger of God which is at present the KJV Bible
with figures listed below passages and each figure name is linked to
an explanation. There is also a list of a couple hundred figures and
descriptions for each figure. Feel free to use them for reference.
If you have questions you can email me. Just remove the "nospam" from
the email address and it will work.

Most of the so called "apparent contradictions" in the Bible are due
to errors in translation or errors in understanding. Much of the
latter comes from failing to recognize the figures that are employed
where people think contradictions exist so a healthy dose of
information on figures of speech will help you when you are faced with
an apparent contradiction. You can download a free copy of
Bullinger's Figures of Speech Used in the Bible and a free copy of
Bullinger's How To Enjoy the Bible at the following link. If you have
trouble, send me an email and I'll send it to you. The download links
are in the center of the page.

Strange that fundies can present nothing but hot air when pointed to one of
the painfully obvious real contradictions in the wholly babble...
A certain Mr Gastritis once... err, Gastrich once ran into a certain
newsgroup boldly claiming that "there are no contradictions in the babble"
too. I asked him about one of the countless contradictions, asked him to
tell me how to supposedly resolve that one... and am STILL waiting for a
reply.
Well, actually I'm no longer waiting. Fundies claim there are no
contradictions out of sheer desperation, more to convince themselves than
to convince any doubter. All so-called "explanations" I ever saw involve
adding interpretations at least three times as voluminous as the verses in
question, and after mumbling these interpretations the fundies show their
braindeath by uttering "see? the babble is literally true!".
By the way, all you fundie numbnuts out there, remember Deut 4:2. You are to
neither add nor take away from The Word(TM), and what else is interpreting
than taking away the original meaning and adding your own?
Tough luck. Interpretations are not a valid way of "explaining away" the
myriads of problems with the babble.

Hello Bob,
You are leading us to believe a lie:
the "move" part wasnot as you mislead us: upon the "Earth"; it was
upon the WATER.
Also the Bible didnot say as you said (another lie), "Heavens"; it said
Heaven.
Jesus said Earth was originally ice. Can you find that in Jesus' words
in the Bible?

No. You are making a misrepresentation.
Where was the water? On the earth. What was the name of and what
still is the name of this planet. Earth.

The Hebrew word for heaven is plural. Look it up, shamayim is always
plural.

I never said Jesus said the earth was ice. The word ice is not even
used in the New Testament. However, the surface of the earth was
dark, water freezes when it is cold, the water on the surface of the
earth would have been ice.

I see you are up to your usual dishonest self.
Why don't you go out and find you a pretty girl to devote your time
to; or if you are married spend some time with your wife - or, get
involved with a bowling league. Find something to do with your life
besides trying to make yourself look big by being disrespectful to
others.
Your comment makes it very evident that your mind has become hot
wired, seared with a hot iron, reprobate, unable to tell truth from
error because of your bigotry, prejudice, and hatred.

Non answer are just as good as answers when it comes to showing the actual
knowledge of people who claim to be bible authorities because they can read

Most people who actually are concerned about their religious beliefs are
interested in honesty and suggesting softball rather than answer or explain
will not sttike them as honest.

off. Christianity and Judaism would not be as screwed up as they are
today if it weren't for the oral traditions of the Pharisees of the
past and present that have done much to hide what the Word teaches.

Most of the so called "apparent contradictions" in the Bible are due
to errors in translation or errors in understanding. Much of the
latter comes from failing to recognize the figures that are employed

Great. I'm not done with the Adam and Eve part yet; or, the other

i.e. the solid sky dome decorated with the "little lights"
and the two "big lights".
That "first verse" is simply the TITLE or introductory phrase
to the story.
The JPS TANAKH properly translates it as:
'WHEN GOD BEGAN TO CREATE HEAVEN AND EARTH --
the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the
surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the
water -- God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.'
The Genesis 1 creation story depicts the ancient cosmological

Not so Libertarius. The JPS Tanakh trranslates it wrong. The passage
begins "bereshith" which is properly translated "in the beginning" in
the KJV. The earth was originally created perfect, but became
imperfect as I establish in the chapters I spoke of. That JPS Tanakh
must be a paraphrase version like the Living Bible or Good News for
Modern Man. The word "wind" is not in verse two, the word is "ruach"
which can be translated wind, but here it is "of" (Genitive of Origin)
God and is therefore spirit an invisible supernatural force. The word
"moved", as I said, means brroded or hovered and putting "The Spirit
of God Moved" we have a supernatural force exerting downward pressure
on the earth. There is nothing in Genesis 1:2 that says the earth is
flat, in fact if you read what Genesis says you will see that it
speaks of a round earth.
I am also right and you are wrong about the topic of verse two and
following. The topic is the "earth". Yes, "heaven" is made on day
two, but that is the expanse above the surface of the earth, not the
same as the heavens in verse one. In verse one you have to domains, a
heavenly and an earthly for two types of beings spiritual and natural.
That's all I have time for now. You might want to check out what I
wrote. It's only five chapters; but they are five chapters that wil
get you on the right track. Here's the link:
