How Christ is an anchor |
Devotional Guide
For the week of December 12, 2004
JESUS CAME EXACTLY ON TIME
How Christ is an anchor
To Read: Ezekiel 10-12
To Know:
"I bear witness to myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness to me."
(Jn. 8:18)
Moses Parsons, the second pastor of the Byfield Parish Church, sent forth a
company of men, many to a certain death. The day was the 17th of September
in 1775. The men crowded into the Byfield meetinghouse were soldiers of the
Arnold expedition to Quebec. The pastor preached to the men whose mission
was doomed from the start. Canada would not become the 14th colony and the
cost in human life would be great.
God sent forth his Son to an equally certain death. In the case of Christ,
it was not a matter of defeat. Upon his departure from heaven, joy abounded.
Angels from on high sang as a choir on the plains of Bethlehem. Joy
overflowed because Jesus' death was gain not loss. Centuries before Christ
came, Isaiah declared that he was to see "the fruit of the travail of his
soul and be satisfied." (53:11)
God sent forth his Son. Although God knew human beings before the foundation
of the earth, we began our existence when formed in the womb. Mohammed,
Buddha, and every other religious founder also began in the womb. Jesus has
no beginning. He arrived here from heaven in order to die on earth to save a
dying race. That was not true of any other self-appointed religious founder.
To Do:
Those whose faith is in Jesus Christ have an anchor of the soul. They stand
on bedrock. Their confidence is in God's eternal purpose. Apart from such
faith they would be tyrannized by adversity. Confidence in the eternal Son
who became incarnate in the man Jesus gives life its strength and hope.

Yeah, but according to your myth, he didn't stay dead!
What a disingenous charade! To give one's life for others is the
ultimate sacrifice, but only if you truly give it! If you get your
life right back it's a meaningless gesture.

Come talk to me when you have all the prerogatives of the godhead, then
voluntarily surrender them to go die for people who claim your gesture is
meaningless ..
Come back when you get a brain and converse with us.

And then get them all back again 3 days later? Damn right it's
meaningless! It would more meaningful if he stayed dead, but not much,
since the whole idea of one perfect person dying to atone for the sins
of generations unborn is metaphysical nonsense anyway.
I can understand superstitious hocus-pocus like that being believed 20
centuries ago. It made for a good way to found a new religion, but how
can any thinking person accept that reasoning today?

Dead is different from sick.

Then no death is meaningful, or much of a sacrifice.
