How Jesus can be safely trusted
To Read: Deuteronomy 4-6
To Know:
"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner
nature is being renewed every day. For this slight momentary affliction is
preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." (2 Cor.
4:16,17)
The fourth Byfield parsonage was constructed with a study for the pastor.
The house design sealed off the study, permitting parishioners to come and
go unseen. Fire took the first Byfield parsonage at the end of the 19th
century. A half a century earlier Deacon Benjamin Coleman's heirs gave his
house to the church for its second parsonage. The Byfield congregation
shrank until by the middle of the 20th century the pastor of the Rowley
Congregational Church served Byfield too. Byfield sold the Coleman house.
When Byfield recovered, we engaged our own pastor and rented a house until
in the late 1950's the fourth parsonage was built. In 1977 a pastor's study
was included in a reconstructed Parish House. In 1978 it was decided to
enlarge the kitchen in the parsonage by removing the wall into the no longer
needed study. Since it was not load bearing, it was safely removed.
Christians cannot be safely removed from the world. We are designed to bear
the weight of God's glory. The present suffering of those whose faith is in
Jesus Christ is meant to strengthen believers in order to bear the weight or
significance God has for the world.
To Do:
Is your faith in Jesus Christ? You may be the only Jesus someone will ever
meet. When Paul writes, "Christ in you, the hope of glory," he means that
the struggles that believers bear on behalf of Christ are intended to
persuade the onlooking world that Jesus can be safely trusted.

And the suffering those whose faith is in Jesus Christ impose on
others? What is the purpose of that?
## Faith proceeds from fear, by way of conceit, to hatred
