How obedience is of faith
To Read: Amos 4-6

"Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the
gospel of God which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy
scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David
according to the flesh and designated Son of God in power according to the
Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the
obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations" (Rm.
1:1-5)
Willful disobedience tests the limits of the most patient parent. My father
was a patient man. He grew up during the great depression and was deprived
in ways his grandchildren can hardly imagine. Next door to my father was
Roger Lord, his best friend. The two wanted to be doctors and my father's
aunt promised to make it happen. In October of 1929 the world of my father's
youth suddenly fell apart. The U.S. stock market sank and unemployment rose.
My father was a casualty of the crash. He did not lose a job; he was taken
out of school to find one. Less than a year from graduation he quit school
to care for his father's pigs. His friend Roger graduated and eventually
became Dr. Lord. Never do I remember my father being bitter or resentful.
What I do remember is the day he was ready to put me up for adoption and
told me so. My willful disobedience had pushed his nearly infinite patience
too far.
Paul was commissioned to bring about the obedience of faith among the
nations. The task would depend on the presence of divine power. Willful
disobedience encircles the earth. The disobedience of unbelief is
everywhere. The obedience of faith is the fruit of a heart converted and
conforming to Jesus Christ.
