THE HOLY SPIRIT
How only one God?
To Read: Proverbs 19-21
To Know:
"And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with
you always, to the close of the age.'" (Matt 28:18-20)
When I was young, spiritual reality was severely discounted. Most parents,
teachers, and even many clergy ignored at best and dismissed at worst the
spiritual dimension of life. In homes, the Bible was rarely opened and
classrooms taught about life at the surface. In the churches most
worshippers who sang "glory be to the Holy Ghost" could not explain who he
actually was.
Our family attended the Congregational church in town. For us not to be
taught to know the Holy Spirit was especially egregious. We were one of the
reformed churches rooted in John Calvin. Regarding the inclusion of the Holy
Spirit in the formula Jesus gave for baptism Calvin wrote, "Paul connects
together these three, God, Faith, and Baptism, and reasons from the one to
the other - viz., because there is one faith, he infers that there is one
God; and because there is one baptism, he infers that there is one faith.
Therefore, if by baptism we are initiated into the faith and worship of one
God, we must of necessity believe that he into whose name we are baptized is
the true God. And there cannot be a doubt that our Savior wished to testify,
by a solemn rehearsal, that the perfect light of faith is now exhibited,
when he said, 'Go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit' (Matt. 28:19), since this is
the same thing as to be baptized into the name of the one God, who has been
fully manifested in the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. What, then, is our
Savior meaning in commanding baptism to be administered in the name of the
Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit? But is this anything else than to
declare that the Father, Son, and Spirit, are one God. Wherefore, since it
must be held certain that there is one God, not more than one, we conclude
that the Word and Spirit are the very essence of God." (Calvin's Institutes
1, 13,16)

I like that.....also in Genesis 1:26-27 it says "Then God (original hebrew
text says 'Elohim' which is plural) said: 'let US make man in OUR image,
after OUR likeness. So Elohim created man in His own image in the image of
Elohim he created him"
and
Acts 2:17,21 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I
will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; and it shall come to pass that
whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved"
and
1Corinthians 8:6 "yet for us there is one God, the Father of whom are all
things, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through
whom we live"
and
John 14:17-18 "but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you,
I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you"
John 14:20 "at that day you will know that I am in my father, and you in me,
and I in you...and I will love him and manifest myself to him"
John 12:45 "and he who sees me sees Him who sent me"
John 10:29-30 "My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and
no one is able to snatch theim out of my father's hand. I and my father are
one"
2 corintians 5:19 "That is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to
Himself"
Romans 8:9 "But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit; if indeed the
spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of
Christ, he is not his"
Hebrews 1:3 "Jesus, who being the brightness of His (God) glory and the
express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His
power"
John 1:1-5 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made
through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was
life, and the life was the light of man. And the light shines in the
darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it."
So there are many places it talks of the one God but I love your reference
from calvin
