How the Exodus was great; the Resurrection fantastic
To Read: Esther 7-10
To Know:
"For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before
you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the
Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly
destroyed. And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no
courage left in any man, because of you; for the Lord your God is he who is
God in heaven above and on the earth beneath." (Josh. 2:10,11)
This winter was cold. The frost was turning up our streets on its way out
of the ground. We were bouncing over mounds of macadam and through
potholes. Thawing means upheaval. Melting streets is child's play when
compared to melting a hard human heart. Melting hearts is the aim of God in
the gospel of Jesus Christ.
When Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah while he was being transfigured, the
subject was his departure in Jerusalem. (Lk. 9:31) The Greek word
translated departure is exodus. When the story of the exodus of the
Israelites out of Egypt spread throughout the world, the people feared God.
Even Rahab in far away Jericho heard the story and feared Israel's God.
Christians witness to the death and resurrection of Jesus. The story of the
cross is meant to melt the hardest heart. Who loves a friend enough to die
for him or her? Jesus died for his enemies. (Rm. 5:6-8) When this message
melts a heart, our lives, like our roads, turn upside down.
To Do:
The news of the Exodus spread fast because it was astounding. Even so, the
exodus out of Egypt cannot compare to the resurrection of Jesus to
permanent life. When Christ rose he also released all his own. On the last
day he will raise believers from the dead. The method designed to bring
believers back to life is the preaching of the cross with its call for
repentance and faith. The meaning of the cross is the core of our witness.
To Ask:
Father, lead me to those you have prepared to hear the story of your Son
and his salvation.
