How to be equipped by little things
To Read: Hebrews 1-3
To Know:
"For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall
see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel."
"These seven are the eyes of the Lord, which range through the whole earth."
(Zech.4: 10)
The success God gave us was threatened early on. For half a decade we
trusted God to do his will among us and he did. The congregation enlarged.
The budget increased. Mission work expanded. Prayer was being answered with
almost no waiting period. Our influence in the denomination was significant.
Because these things happened after my arrival some thought they were my
doing. This was what threatened to turn the congregation back.
For half a decade the mission and ministries of the Byfield Parish Church
flourished. But as the decade was closing many in the congregation feared
that these successes (they were actually evidence that we were living the
normal Christian life) would mean my departure. The expectation was that a
larger church would woo me away and that the Byfield folk would be left
holding the bag financially. This was an argument marshaled against
building a new facility when the idea initially surfaced in the late 1970's.
What the congregation couldn't know with certitude was that my call was as
much to a place as to a task. Byfield was not a stepping-stone. It was a
field of service. Never did I hear the Lord's voice more clearly than when
he said for me to humble myself and take this struggling congregation as a
lifetime call.
To Do:
Corporate recruiters find that college graduates want everything now. They
don't want to climb the ladder; they want to start at the top. That is not
the way God works. We are equipped for great challenges by being faithful in
little things.
To Ask:
Father, teach me your heart as I seek to be faithful in the little things of
life.
