GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY ON ELECTION DAY
How to change your nature
To Read: Isaiah 19-21
To Know:
"Thus says the Lord: 'Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh
his arm, whose heart turns away from the Lord.'" (Jer.17: 5)
Yesterday I wrote regarding my inward about-face at Fort Bliss Texas. That
morning when I was summoned to the battalion headquarters it was to answer
to the charge of dereliction of duty. On my way to face the colonel I prayed
the foxhole prayer. It was a prayer of desperation. I was terrified that the
military police were waiting at the headquarters building to take me into
custody. Instead, the authorities forgave the charge against me and let me
go. At the bottom of the steps that morning a voice spoke inside my mind.
"You asked, and I have answered you." To this day I believe that was the
voice of Jesus Christ.
Forty-three years ago I did not know that I was the captive of my own will.
I wanted my own way no matter the cost. Jesus Christ was a threat to my
autonomy. Nothing in me wanted him. The name of Christ in my mouth was a
curse. Never did I suspect that what was coming out of my mouth exposed my
heart. Until that Monday morning, I hated Jesus Christ whether I knew it or
not. Walking away from battalion headquarters I suddenly wanted to know
Jesus and what he wanted from me. This dramatic change in my will was the
work of God. The will is our nature expressing itself. Only God can change
our nature. We might imagine that we can change ourselves, but the voice
that spoke to me on the bottom step erased that idea from my thinking.
