LESSONS FROM BOSTON'S BIG DIG
How to have hope
To Read: John 19-21
To Know:
"For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord
Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given
thanks, he broke it, and said, 'This is my body which is for you. Do this in
remembrance of me.'" (1 Cor. 11:23.24)
Boston's Big Dig took the road above Beantown and sunk it underground. For
this, taxpayers paid a fortune. One of the costs that officials were
unwilling to pay was the loss of the ancient treasures long ago buried in
soil of the city. Each time the Dig unearthed a valuable relic the project
was put on hold until the object was preserved. Jesus is no longer among us
in the flesh in order to teach us the lesson of the Big Dig for God's
kingdom. Christ is here in the lives of those he inhabits through faith.
Since Christ gave me faith let me tell another parable of the Big Dig.
A certain crew dug a trench under Boston for an underground way through the
city where they found a colonial teapot. Boston was reminded of the party
thrown in 1773 at the expense of East India Tea Company and the king of
England. The teapot was saved in remembrance of the blood spilled that this
might be a land of liberty. Woe to those who teach my people that there is
hope for those who refuse to believe that salvation is in the shed blood of
Jesus Christ.
To Do:
In every book of the Bible God has buried treasure. The message of all
scripture is that the coming Christ would taste death on behalf of his
people. Those who find these passages only to throw them away imperil both
themselves and those who follow them. To find the truth of God and not
preserve it for future generations is far worse than losing Boston history.
