Object: If anyone comes to Me, and does not " hate " his own father and mother... Lk 14:26 explained
" If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and
mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even
his own life, he cannot be My disciple. " Lk. 14:26
******************************************************************
a strong statement by the Son of God, indeed. if taken at face
value the reader would certainly get the impression that God is
telling His elect one to hate his family rather than love them which
is taught by Apostle John. an apparent contradiction in doctrine...
the Atheist then has a case against the Word of God.
but this is not the case, at all.
the word " hate " in Luke 14:26 means " ill will; to persecute; to
detest. " it would be a direct contradiction to the Commandment...
" Honor your father and your mother " to detest, to persecute and show
ill will to ones parents if the command of the Lord Jesus means to
hate them.
as with all things of the Word of God, the Bible is it's own
dictionary and the context in which a doctrine is found must define it
as well as the context of the Bible as a whole. remembering that
God's Word is in parable form so that the non-elect will never
understand it ( Mk. 4:34; Lk. 8:10 ) and the elect must " study to
show thyself approved "... 2 Tim. 2:15
when we compare Lk. 14:26 to Mt. 10:37 the meaning of the word
' hate ' in Lk. 14:26 becomes apparent.. " He who loves father or
mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or
daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. " the word ' hate ' then,
means ' to love less. '
the historical context has it that the Jew believing in Jesus as the
promised Messiah was contrary to everything taught by the religious
leaders of Jesus day... even 'til now. the Jew finding Jesus
appealing would be cast out by his own family. Jesus therefore taught
His hearers that obeying family in these religious matters would
render oneself excluded from worthiness to follow Jesus.
such, then, means to ' love less '... to put the things of family
and self in a category of worldliness and the things of God to the
forefront of ones affections. should the two be reconciled any other
way would result in excluding oneself from eternal life as did the
hearers of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 13:44-48.
*******************************************************************
now in the case of this word ' hate ' as it's found in Lk. 14:26, it
is much misapplied when it's described as an attribute of God for God
to ' love less ' rather than an attitude man is to hold. such is the
case when will worshipers use the meaning of the word ' hate ' in Lk.
14:26 and apply it to define the ' hate ' God has for Esau in Romans
9: 13... as to ' love less. '
" Jacob I loved but Esau I hated "...
same Greek word found in both passages mentioned. here we have an
attribute of God expressing itself in the doctrine of election... a
far different thing than being instructed by God to have this attitude
towards family and self in the realm of following Jesus as in Lk.
14:26.
the forecast of being the object of the hated by God is to endure
His anger everyday ( Ps. 7:11) and thus His hate every day ( Ps. 5:5 )
which ends in eternal death. ( Ps. 21:8,9 ) ... hardly to be ' loved
less. '
it is simply contrary to sound doctrine to take an instruction to
man and turn it in to an attribute of God in order to lure the
non-elect into the congregation... it is to preach to
' itching ears '... to make God palatable to the reprobate...
ever wonder how these TV Evangelicals amass tens of thousands of
followers while the Son of God Himself had but 500 or so believers
while He walked the earth ? simply by rewording the Word of God so as
to make it appealing to the lost... which brings in revenue to these
multi-millionaire Evangelicals. not so when one is allowed by God to
understand Acts 13:48... preaching the hard doctrines, such as,
salvation being solely God's doing, is not what's preached in
Evangelical circles, as in their perversion of Lk. 14:26.

" believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved "
Acts 16:31
" and as many as had been appointed to eternal life, believed."
Acts 13:48

A nice spin put on an un-Christ-like statement of Christ,
from the same people who don't ever seem to want to hear
theories that the fairytale of "Sodom and Gomorrah" was
really about hospitality, not homosexuality.
Unfortunately, Jesus did even more to sew discord
within families, sounding almost like the Church of
Scientology in its efforts to split its cult members away
from their own families. If you wanted so much as to take
2 minutes to say good-by to your family, before gallavanting
off with Jesus, he thru a hissy fit, saying that he was more important
and that you must come, IMMEDIATELY.
The delightful absurdity of religion, its blind spots, its myths.
Just one more example to show that "God's inspired word" is
really a Rorshach ink blot, a fluffy cloud in the sky, in which
you can imagine nearly anything that you want. A God worth
his salt would not have presented the human race with
arcane symbology as crucial moral instruction. Whatever
he had to say, he should just say it, clearly, above debate.
The burden should be on the Speaker to prove His case,
not on the fallible listener to take on faith, when
the listener might in his own corrupt
imagination think that he hears the Word of God when
he is really listening just to his own, corrupt inner voice.
That is the approximate case today almost across the board in the
Churches. Churches far too cozy with Caesar, far too much
rolling in money, far too much spewing of crackpot hate.
