Iraqi Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi escaped an assassination attempt
when a car bomb exploded at a checkpoint, hours after authorities reported
the deaths of 70 people in two mass killings.
Allawi was not hurt in the Wednesday night attack, Allawi spokesman Thair
al-Naqib said, but several guards and policemen were killed. Al-Naqib called
them "martyrs."
The attack occurred shortly before 11 p.m. (3 p.m. ET) on the main road
leading to the Baghdad headquarters of Allawi's party, the Iraqi National
Accord.
Allawi, described as being in "good spirits," returned to his residence.
Earlier Wednesday, Iraqi authorities reported the shooting deaths of 20
Iraqi soldiers in Haditha and the discovery of 50 bodies in the Tigris
River.
In addition, four recent car bombings killed four people, including a child,
and wounded at least eight others.
The violence raged as the country's newly elected politicians thrashed out
the shape of the new transitional government, nearly three months after the
January 30 elections for a transitional assembly.
President Jalal Talabani told CNN Turk television that negotiations to form
a new Iraqi government will not be finished in time to announce Cabinet
appointments on Thursday.
Prime Minister-designate Ibrahim al-Jaafari had said Wednesday that he
expected the government to be announced Thursday.
Insurgents killed the 20 Iraqi soldiers after abducting them from a vehicle
and taking them to the soccer stadium in the western town of Haditha, where
they were shot, a police official told CNN.
The soldiers, dressed in civilian clothes, were headed to the al-Haklaniya
police station just south of Haditha.
The U.S. Marines said they could not confirm the deaths. Haditha is about
150 miles west of Baghdad.
Comments made by Talabani suggested the 50 bodies found in the Tigris River
were thought to be people who had been held hostage.
There were claims last week from Shiite officials that Sunni militants
kidnapped dozens of Shiite residents from the Madain area south of Baghdad,
but Iraqi forces found no captives when they went to Madain.
"More than 50 bodies have been brought out from the Tigris and we have the
full names of those who were killed and those criminals who committed these
crimes," Talabani told reporters.
Iraqi emergency police told CNN that the Ministry of Interior confirmed
discovery of the bodies in the southern province of Wasit. Among the dead
were children and women, the police said.
In other recent attacks:
a.. A roadside bomb exploded on the highway leading to the Baghdad
International Airport, killing at least two people Thursday morning, Iraqi
police said. Video of the scene showed an SUV engulfed in flames. Iraqi
police sources said a convoy of three SUV's was passing by when the
improvised explosive device detonated about 9 a.m. (1 a.m. EDT.)
a.. A bombing about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday targeted an Iraqi police patrol in
the Abu al-Cheer neighborhood in southern Baghdad. Three civilians were
wounded and two police cars damaged, police said.
a.. About 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, a bombing occurred outside the Bilat
al-Shouhada' police station in Dora district in southern Baghdad, Iraqi
police said. Only the driver of the car bomb was killed; 15 cars were
damaged.
a.. An hour earlier, a car bomb targeting a U.S. military convoy near the
Baghdad airport exploded, killing two Iraqi civilians -- including a
child -- and wounding one U.S. soldier and at least four Iraqi civilians,
police said.

Now you are blending theological systems. Not all religions believe the
same thing. An Iraqi Prime minister escaping an assassination attempt is
lucky that he is able to continue his purpose on earth... but he isn't an
agent of the truth of Christ, nor a reciever of salvation unless he trusts
in Jesus Christ. Children aren't required since they aren't in a state to
accept salvation until they are older (around 12 or older).
