I do not rejoice at the death of anyone, let alone a crime victim. Matthew
Shepard was the victim of a robbery, but if he had been the victim of a
media-invented hate crime, I would still condemn this crime in no uncertain
terms.

Matthew Shepard was the victim of a robbery, but if he had been the
victim of a media-invented hate crime, I would still condemn this
crime in no uncertain terms.
*****. McKinney's own girlfriend testified that Henderson's last words
as he left her house was "We're going to off us a *****!" Henderson
testified to the same thing. It was a hate crime. Try reading the court
transcript sometime, it makes it perfectly clear.

Mother Speaks Out Against Hate Crimes

Seven years ago, two young men tied Matthew Shepard to a fence and beat
him to death because he was gay.
Last Thursday, his mother, Judy Shepard, spoke at John Carroll
University about the pain that hate has caused her family and how it can
be stopped. Shepard told a crowded Kulas Auditorium that voting for
candidates who support the rights of homosexuals and making their
beliefs heard are what college students can do to combat discrimination.
She asked the audience to take away at least one word from her speech -
"respect."
"Our lives are not made better by hate. It kills us from the inside out
and it destroys families," Shepard said. "Let people know that hate is
unacceptable."
Shepard began her speech with the Victim Impact Statement she delivered
during the trial of her son’s killers. She spoke about how she missed
the late night talks she had with her son about the problems with the
world. Shepard called him "my constant reminder of how good life could
be." She said after his death, "All our hope for Matt was killed."
"Hate is still alive and well in our country," Shepard said.
She cited that in 36 of the 50 states it is legal to fire employees
because they are gay, lesbian or transsexual. She said President Bush
has called the gay and lesbian community second class citizens.
Shepard urged the crowd to identify candidates who support gay rights.
"Voting is not just a privilege, it’s a responsibility," she said.
Shepard called legislation like the Federal Marriage Amendment, which
would legally define marriage as a union between a man and a woman,
"hypocrisy at its finest."
She said many of its supporters claim to be protecting the sanctity of
marriage, but they have been married more than once.
"It’s time [for homosexuals] to be recognized as equal Americans," she
said.
Shepard recounted the moment when her 18-year-old son told her he was
gay. She said she had known it since he was a child, attributing it to
mother’s intuition.
Shepard said homosexuals that are not openly gay need to come out. "You
have a duty to the younger generations to do that. If you don’t come
out, no one is going to know how wonderful you are."
Shepard said she never blamed her son’s killers for his death, rather
she blames society for the murder. "Matt is no longer with us because of
two people who learned it was OK to hate," she said.
On Oct. 7, 1998, 21 year-old Matthew Shepard left a campus bar with two
men claiming to be gay. The men took him to a remote area nearby and
tortured him. He was found by a cyclist 18 hours later. Shepard died
that week.
After Matthew’s murder, his family created the Matthew Shepard
Foundation to "replace hate with understanding, compassion and
acceptance," according to the foundation’s Web site. Judy Shepard has
traveled across the country to speak about her foundation and the danger
of hatred.
