JONAH - The Reluctant Prophet - Bible Study
By
Dr. Chuck Missler
See God's hand at work in the life of one of His prophets to bring repentance to one
of the largest cities of the ancient world and discover lessons from Jonah's life that we
can apply to ourselves. What does Jesus mean when he speaks of "the sign of the prophet
Jonah" in Matthew 12? Study this "whale of a tale," validated by Jesus, with special
significance for the New Testament believer.
Author: While some believe that, because this book was written in the third person and
past tense, someone else wrote it. However, this is mere speculation since they forget
that was a common literary style used by many Old Testament writers, including Moses,
Isaiah and Daniel. It is probable it was indeed written by Jonah himself. Date: Roughly
either during or just after the reign of King Jeroboam II (793-753 B.C.)
Because of the sheer number of miracles present in the story of Jonah many scholars,
Christians included, have judged this book to be a mere fable, an allegory meant to teach
a lesson, but nothing more. They couldn't be more wrong. Jesus Christ himself recognized
the historicity of this man whom He personally called a prophet. He acknowledged the
miracle of Jonah's recovery from the fish, and He based His call of repentence on the
validity of Jonah's message to the Ninevites.
