Object: Limited Atonement ( Particular Redemption ) vs. Universal Atonement
Probably the most hated doctrine of all is that labeled ' Limited
Atonement '. it is the strong meat of the Word separating the
immature believer from the mature as well as separating the elect from
the non-elect. yet, it can be easily shown from Scripture that both
the Old Testament and New Testament point out that God has mercy on
some and the rest, He hardens. Ro. 9:18
Jesus Christ Himself taught Limited Atonement to His apostles ( and
therefore to us ) when He said... "I am the good shepherd. The good
shepherd gives His life for the sheep " Jo. 10:11 ff
it's apparent that all of mankind are not counted among His sheep
since many will go to hell. the Universalist hopes in a salvation
offered on a take it or leave it basis... which makes God subservient
to man and not omnipotent nor Sovereign Lord.
but the Scriptures say to the contrary as Jesus own words declare...
" I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You
have given Me, for they are Yours." Jo.17:9
and those that are given Him were chosen, apart from good works,
before He created the world...
" He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we
should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself,
according to the good pleasure of His will,
to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us
accepted in the Beloved." Eph. 1:4-6 ff
redemption was particular. it is effectual only for the believer.
and according to Eph. 1:4-6 all who would believe have been chosen
according to the good pleasure of Gods will apart from any good in the
chosen one prompting God to elect him.
particular redemption is the cause for Noah and his family finding
favor with God while the rest of humanity was accounted as the objects
of the wrath of God and were thus destroyed.
particular redemption is the cause for Israel finding favor with God
while the Egyptians found only wrath.
particular redemption is the cause of some hearing the message of the
gospel while others in the same crowd find it to be foolishness...
" and as many as were appointed to eternal life, believed. " Acts
13:48
Peter had limited Atonement in mind when he wrote saying...
" The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count
slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any
should perish but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
the ' us ' Peter is referring to is ' us ' believers, ' us ' chosen
ones... Peter is writing to ' those who have received like precious
faith as ' us '. he is not writing to the non-elect, to unbelievers
since...
" the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God,
for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they
are spiritually discerned." 1 Cor. 2:14
God is not willing that any ( of us ) should perish but that all
( of us ) should come to repentance.
the only way to make 2 Pe. 3:9 teach universal atonement is to admit
that Christ died for all those whom God wanted to save, but couldn't.
this would mean of course that God is not omnipotent... that Christ
failed at Calvary since more have gone on to perdition than have been
saved from it.
in the doctrine of limited atonement as taught by Christ Himself and
the Apostles, God's work of salvation was complete before the world
began. that He will lose none. that all that the Father gave Him
shall come to Him.
there is no provision for the rest. these will get justice... " For
the LORD loves justice, And does not forsake His saints; They are
preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked
shall be cut off. " Ps.37:8 ... ( a limited atonement verse.)
limited atonement... particular redemption is taught in John 3:16...
ask these questions of the verse... ' who is it who will not perish
but have everlasting life ' ? ... those who believe in Christ.
who is it then who are included in the word ' world ' ? For God so
loved the ' world ' ?... those who believe in Christ. the word
' world '... ' cosmos ' means ' men out of every tribe and nation but
not all tribes and nations as a whole ' since not all trust in Christ.
the term ' loved by God ' is never used in reference to those who are
perishing... for to them the gospel is foolishness. 1 Cor. 1:18
God hates the wicked... Ps. 5:5 the wicked are in a sexual embrace
with the devil... 1 Jo. 5:19 since they are of their father the devil
and want to do his desires... Jo. 8:44
Christ did not pay the penalty for their sins otherwise they would be
regenerate believers. He does not lose any who were given Him by the
Father.
it is the social gospel which says ' God loves everybody '. God does
not love the wicked.... God hates the wicked ( Ps 5:5 ) in every
preaching of the gospel of Christ in Spirit and in Truth when and
where God is willing to show mercy all who are chosen to believe, will
believe, since ' as many as were appointed to eternal life, believed '
Acts 13:48... " all that the Father gives Me shall come to Me " Jo.

6:37

Paul didn't say Christ died for the elect, of whom he was
chief, but for sinners. Every man is a sinner, and Christ
tasted death for "every man" (Heb. 2:9). You can't have faith
that Christ died for your sins, unless the Bible says he died
for them. If there's even one person for whom the value of
Christ's atonement is not sufficient, then no one can be sure
it's not them.
The five point Calvinist falsely assumes that if Christ died
for everyone, it must therefore mean He didn't die for the sin
of unbelief, that God is not sovereign, or that Christ is a
failed Savior. These are all conclusions based on faulty
logic, rather than revelation from God's word.
There's not one single verse in the Bible that says, or
necessitates Christ died _only_ for the elect. All the
Calvinist can do, is quote Scriptures which say Christ died
for the elect, then read the word "only" into them. They look
right at verses that say Christ died for the world (John
3:16), and covert it to "elect world". They look at the verse
that says Christ died not only for our sins, but also the sins
of the "whole world" (1 John 2:2), and do the same. When
faced with Scripture that says Christ is the Savior of all
men, specially them that believe (1 Timothy 4:10), once again,
they render it "all elect men", especially them "elect" that
believe. In each case, they have to insert the idea "elect"
into the passage, where it does not occur.
The Scripture is clear Christ died for "all" men (1 Timothy
4:10), "every man" (Hebrews 2:9), not only for our sins, but
also for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2), and even
died for false teachers who deny the Lord who bought them (2
Peter 2:21). John 12:47 says, "And if any man hear my words,
and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the
world, but to save the world." This clearly shows the world
Christ came to save, includes "any man" who hears and does not
believe the gospel.
On top of that, you have Scripture that plainly shows men are
damned because they do not believe in Christ as their Savior
(John 3:18, 36). Now how could people be damned for lack of
faith in Christ as their Savior, unless Christ is their
Savior? And how could he possibly be their Savior, if He did
not die to pay for their sins? Otherwise, you have God
condemning people for failing to believe a lie.
The Calvinist objects, not on the basis of revelation, but of
their faulty reasoning. These arguments overlook the fact
that faith is the method by which God applies the benefit of
Christ's atonement to an individual's account.
In OT pictures, we find it was not enough for the sacrifice to
die. Unless its blood was applied to the doorpost of the
house, the angel of death would not pass over it. Otherwise,
faith isn't even a necessary means of salvation, and the elect
would all be born saved. No, even the elect are born
unregenerate, and there must be a time when God imparts
salvation to them, through the faith which He gives.
Thus, when the non-elect, perish, it is not because the blood
of atonement was insufficient for them, or God was not
sovereign, or because salvation depended on human merit, but
because God never sovereignly applied the value of atonement
to the doorpost of their soul through faith.
Salvation comes by faith, and faith by hearing the word of God
(Eph. 2:8-9; Rom. 10:17). Faith is a gift of God, and He only
imparts it to the elect. No one knows who the elect and
non-elect are, before they become saved. Thus, the only way
you could have an objective gospel that is based on faith in
Christ's atonement, is if you have a verse of Scripture that
says and means Christ died for all men. Otherwise, rather
than salvation based on faith in Christ's atonement, you have
salvation based on faith in the idea that somehow you must be
special, and God must have elected you. Paul didn't say
Christ died for the elect, of whom I am chief, but for
sinners! Every man is a sinner, therefore, Christ died for
every man!

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself
up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every
thought to make it obedient to Christ. ? 2 Corinthians 10:5
Christ died for our sins, and God raised Him from the dead.
Rely on this work alone to escape hell and receive eternal
life (Jn. 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-3; Eph. 2:8-10; 2 Thess. 1:8-9).
