"Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" |
"Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Crying"
Phoebe Snow on "I can't Complain"
House of Blues, 1998
Lyrics:
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
When my heart's full of sorrow
And my eyes are filled with tears
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes.
My mother often told me
Angels bonded your life away
She said I wouldn't complain
But trust in God and pray
I'm on the King's Highway
I'm travelin' everyday
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
When my heart's full of sorrow
And my eyes are filled with tears
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes.
My mother, she's in glory
Thank God, I'm on my way
Father, he's gone too
And sister she could not stay
I'm trusting Him everyday
He will bear my burden away.
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
When my heart's full of sorrow
And my eyes filled with tears
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes.
I thought when she first left me
I'd grieve a little while
Soon it all would be over
And I'd journey on with a smile
But the thought as I get older
I think of what I told her.
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes
When my heart's full of sorrow
And my eyes filled with tears
Lord, I just can't keep from crying sometimes.

I've never heard the Blind Willie Johnson original.
Maybe I'll find it in a second-hand bin someday.
My personal opinion is that this ia a hymn which should be sung in
Church... but that's another subject.
What impresses me about this song is the raw honesty,
the clear and certain awareness, that,
as those before us have gone to their reward,
so must we all.
What impresses me about this song is the hidden, unspoken, sense of joy,
a sure and certain happiness that my mother - and those who trusted in
Him, who have gone before me are now in restful sleep, and will be
raised on that day to eternal life with Him.
What impresses me about this certain knowledge - is the powerfully
conflicting knowledge that we who have trusted in Him will live with
him, and those who rejected Him will be lost.
Just as sometimes I am able to concentrate and focus my mind on the
coming Joy of eternal life, so too sometimes I cannot avoid being aware
of those who reject Him and thus consign their own soul to eternal death.
Sometimes, I just can't keep from crying.

No doctrine is the judge of the Word of God,
THE WORD OF GOD IS THE JUDGE OF ALL DOCTRINE.

It is amazing how a simple song can cause an effect on those who live
empty lives. Simply amazing.
