Object: Love your enemies!?
Verse from the New International Version of the Bible:
"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace on earth. I did not
come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn 'a man
against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law
against her mother-in-law - a man's enemies will be members of his own
household.' " Matt 10:34-36
Jesus brought free thinking back to the Jewish community of his time,
and is one of the main forces keeping it alive in the world today.
His teachings make people more opinionated, both believers and non,
hence the on-going conflict in this verse.
Why is conflict necessary? Human beings seek conflict when they lack a
sense of justice.
How do you love your enemies? It is easier to figure out once you
realize WHY you love your enemies. There's the reasons that Jesus
say, but also from a pragmatic standpoint, if you don't care about
people becoming "sons of your father," you should still do it not only
because it has been commanded, but for protection of your
reputation...
Anyone who has ever worked in the service industry knows how to love
their enemies. For example, if you hate cops and had to serve them
food, and did it to the best of your ability with a smile and all of
that, then you have "loved your enemy." You have given your enemy
something to eat and/or drink with a loving attitude. Not all service
industry workers are like this, but I would say the majority are.
So free thought promotes opinionated behavior, which causes conflict,
and love of enemies is a way to protect your reputation in conflict.
You are also to love conflict to the point where you would ask someone
who slaps your right cheek to slap the left as well AS A FAVOR. That
is the point that most Christians miss.

His teachings make people more opinionated, both believers and non,

Why is conflict necessary? Human beings seek conflict when they lack a
sense of justice.

Actually conflict arises whenever opinion attempts to supplant the
truth. Those who choose to stand on the side of the truth, Who is
LORD Jesus Christ, find themselves being assailed by the countless
contrarian opinions of those who remain of this world. Indeed, Jesus
has taught us to expect this.
"When they hate you, remember they hated ME first." -- LORD Jesus
Christ

How do you love your enemies?

By having an infinite supply of love from an ever renewing source,
which is the living water that can only come for LORD Jesus Christ
(John 4:10).
Without an ever-renewing supply of HIS love (living water), your
enemies would succeed in harming you by hatefully draining all the
love from your heart so that only hate remains:

It is easier to figure out once you
realize WHY you love your enemies.

The brethren of LORD Jesus Christ choose to love our enemies out of
our love for HIM. We love HIM so much that we want to be obedient to
HIM.
"With man this is impossible but with GOD all things are possible." --
LORD Jesus Christ (Matthew 19:26)

There's the reasons that Jesus
say, but also from a pragmatic standpoint, if you don't care about
people becoming "sons of your father," you should still do it not only
because it has been commanded, but for protection of your
reputation...

See above.

Actually offering the other cheek typically ends physical conflict.

I suspect that Andrew dropping his trousers and showing off his
inevitably pock-marked bottom was probably not what Jesus had in mind
when he told us to turn the other cheek. Not surprising that such a
move would provoke abuse.

Yeah, but by presenting the truth people can view you as combative and
close-minded unless you "love your enemies," I mean if it's your
enemies who are questioning the truth in this case.

How do you love your enemies?

By having an infinite supply of love from an ever renewing source,
which is the living water that can only come for LORD Jesus Christ
(John 4:10).

Without an ever-renewing supply of HIS love (living water), your

Sure, sounds like a reasonable interpretation. Not one that a non-
believer could understand, but sure.

It is easier to figure out once you
realize WHY you love your enemies.

The brethren of LORD Jesus Christ choose to love our enemies out of
our love for HIM. We love HIM so much that we want to be obedient to
HIM.

Maybe that's why you're a doctor.

I don't have an argument to beat any of this, and I guess if you can
say in your heart of hearts that this is truly how you would face a
conflict with evil, then you win. I only believe what I do because
it's a talk that I can walk, regardless of whether or not its the
truth.

to the contrary. what sets the believer apart from the non-believer
is the one is given the grace of salvation while the other remains in
darkness and unbelief. the believer is an alien in this world and the
other a resident; as the believer preaches Christ's salvation to them
the distance becomes more and more apparent.
showing love to the unbeliever simply means preaching the gospel of
Christ to him with the same " as God so loved the world " directive.
there is no ' free thought ' in the things of God... that's
Gnosticism. what God is all about hasn't ever changed.
serving food to cops who are hated has nothing to do with love as in
the Bible word... thats human emotion.

Does the verse say, "Love your unbelievers, and pray for those who
unbelieve at you"?
No! Have you ever read the Old Testament of the Bible? God takes
enemies very seriously, but in the New Testament it changes from the
enemies of Israel or the enemies of God's annointed, etc. to Satan and
his followers. Not unbelievers who are lost in darkness, but people
who actively follow the devil and have completely rejected belief with
full awareness of its consequences.

there is no ' free thought ' in the things of God... that's
Gnosticism.

What!? Gnosticism has nothing to do with free thought.

what God is all about hasn't ever changed.

Free thought doesn't change what God is all about.

It's only one small example illustrating a bigger point, not a thesis
statement.
