"OIL TO MAKE YOUR FACE SHINE" ? huh? psalms 104:15 |
Hi, in Psalms 104:15 there is an unusual verse
that talks about how God gives oil to make your
face shine, and bread to stengthen mans heart.
Are there any (serious, non-sarcastic) Bible
people out there who can tell me what exactly
that means? What kind of oil are they talking
about? I would guess olive oil? and what about
the bread? The reason I ask is because my aunt
has chronic fatigue syndrome, and I was just
wondering. I know a lot of people will think maybe
this is symbolic, but maybe somebody doesn't.
Any responses appreciated. Thanks.

of man, and oil to make his face
to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart.

You left out the most important part of the verse:
"and wine that makes the heart of man happy"
Give you aunt a glass of wine. It will do wonders for her.

Basically. In those times olive oil had many purposes.
As food, as lamp fuel, for softening leather and making ointments and
salves. Men used perfumed oil in their beards the way greasers of the
1050s used brillcream in their hair.
Oil was also used for ceremonial annointing of prophets, kings and
priests. Here's a recipe.
Exodus 30: 23 Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh five hundred
shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, two
hundred fifty, and two hundred fifty of aromatic cane, 24and five
hundred of cassia—measured by the sanctuary shekel—and a hin of olive
oil; 25 and you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as
by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.
A hin is about half a quart.
