BIBLES OR BAYONETS
Our God-given uniqueness
To read the Bible in one year, today Read: Revelations 21, 22
To Know:
³Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not
depart from it.² (Prov. 22:6)
Upon becoming headmaster of Governor Dummer Academy in 1907, Charles Ingham
announced his educational philosophy. He said, ³It is the endeavor of this
school to discover the possibilities of each student and to so train him
that he may realize these possibilities, to render service and to seek
happiness in establishing and maintaining right relations with his
environment.²
Ingham was wise. Proverbs reads, ³Train up a child in the way he should go
and when he is old he will not depart from it.² The verse might better be
translated ³train up a child in his own way.² ³His own way² regards
uniqueness. We are all unique. Parents are obliged to know their own
children well enough to discern their uniqueness. To train up a child is to
direct their steps in accordance with who they are meant to be. Our parental
task is to enable our children to take their appointed place in life.
