Pascal's Wager Says You Should Have an Abortion for The Sake Of Your Child |
If you have an abortion:
Either A)
there is a Christian God and
your baby automatically goes to heaven
or B)
there is no Christian God and
your baby does not go to heaven, of hell
If you do not have an abortion
Either A)
There is a Xian God, and your kid is a good Xian,
ergo he goes to heaven
or B)
There is a Xian God, and your kid becomes an apostate
therefore he goes to Hell
or C)
There is no Xian God, and your kid neither
goes to Heaven nor Hell.
From the game theory matrix above
Pr(Child Goes To Heaven | Abortion) =100%
Pr(Child Goes To Heaven | No Abortion) <100%
And
Pr(Child Goes To Heaven | Abortion) =0%
Pr(Child Goes To Heaven | No Abortion) >0%
*Yes, this is a shot at the stupidity of the original Pascal's Wager,
as well as the absurdity of theology, given its logical implication.

Yes, that is the Catholic percentages. Well put. Such an ugly
extrapolation of the mythology in the cold light of reason, no wonder
it stirred up Earl Webber. The down side is you are considered a
murderer for the abortion. However the more you do it the more the
sacrifice becomes worth it. Of course get in a quick contrition before
you die and you do get a chance for heaven by that mythology.

For starters, any Christian who reads Luke 9:25.
It appears there is a fundamental misunderstanding about Christianity
in this thread. The central theme of Christianity is the individual
soul achieving eternal salvation, losing it means losing everything. I
realize this may seem foreign considering how many
evangelicals(including those in power) seem to think the central theme
should be supporting Israel and unleashing Armageddon as soon as
possible so that they can be personally taken up in the Rapture and
not have to die.
But those evangelicals are mistaken, and the Bible does not support
them. There is a reason the supporters of this eschatology had to
resort to writing their own canon in a series of fictional novels. In
a debate you hear the other side provide a rebuttal, in a novel you
don't.
In any case, that central theme really is about the individual. Only
the individual ultimately decides his or her fate. In Christianity,
one cannot send someone else to heaven, that someone else has to make
that decision. Someone else can certainly *influence* an individual in
making that decision one way or the other, but ultimately only the
individual decides.

So? What could be a great act of Christian love for a mother to ensure

You mean the false dilemma inherent in Pascal's wager?

No self-respecting mother would put her own welfare before that of her
own fetus. You seem to be saying that Christian women should be
selfish in this fashion.

No, I mean the false dilemma inherent in your own supposition.
Christianity does not say the baby "automatically" goes to heaven. Nor
does the lack of existence of a Christian God preclude some concept of
life after death, whether heaven or hell, both or some other concept.
no consideration is given to the fate of the mother or the
abortionist, both of which would presumably also need to be evaluated
if one were going to somehow reduce this to a cost/benefits analysis.
No self-respecting mother would put her own welfare before that of her
own fetus.
?? Are you saying that women who have abortions are not doing this?
While some women would claim an abortion is the most humane thing they
can do for their offspring, surely that is merely a self-serving
justification in at least some cases. Some women just aren't
interested in delivering a baby.
You seem to be saying that Christian women should be
selfish in this fashion.
No, I am not saying that. I am pointing out that even if a baby would
"automatically" go to heaven if they were aborted(which again, is not
something Christianity claims), that doesn't make abortion something
"good", if it jeopardizes the chances of the mother or the abortionist
of going to heaven.

It is the logical implication of an aborted fetus getting a automatic
berth in heaven.

Change baby to abortion providers, doctors and nurses, hospital
administrators, or mothers. The same rules still apply. If there is a
Christian God, and that God is as described by Christian, in an
abortion, the fetus/baby goes to heaven, everyone else goes to hell.

That's a good bit of reasoning, Yang, as far as it goes. Fortunately
for the continued existence of the human race on earth, it's not that
simple.
The first thing I'd note is that killing is wrong, in which case the
killing of the unborn baby lowers the probability of going to heaven
of the abortionist and his or her assistants and the mother and
perhaps the father. For Roman Catholics, there's always confession but
the person confessing must be truly repentant. I'm guessing that's
probably hard to do after living for years with a pattern of sin.
Secondly, we are taught in the Roman Catholic religion to not put our
Lord our God to the test. And I think killing someone and seeing if
they go to heaven would probably qualify as testing God.
Thirdly, I'd like to point out that the current pope's teaching
regarding limbo is not Catholic doctrine and Pope Benedict's
pronouncement did not even have the weight of a papal encyclical. It's
still not clear exactly what will come out of all this in the long
run. In the meantime, there's also reason for Catholics to continue to
believe the traditional teaching that limbo exists. If it does, then
children who are aborted and so die without baptized would spend the
rest of eternity without being in communion with God.
In that last scenario, the logic you've put forth would, of course,
fall apart because the babies aborted would not be going to heaven.
Anyways, just a few quick thoughts.

On that last point, if 1-E[Pr(fetus stuck in limbo
forever|abortion)]>1-E[Pr(Fetus grows up to renounce Catholicism)]
then you still would want have abortion if maximizing the fetus'
probability to attaining heavenhood is your objective.
But thanks for the clarification wrt to the Benedict's pronouncement
vs official doctrine, I was not aware of that.
Anyways, just a few quick thoughts.
