Pastor Dave's Every So Often Quote |
"Waste not fresh tears over old griefs." - Euripides

When you get tangled up in your problems, be still.
God wants us to be still, so he can untangle the knot.

A question; was Josephus jewish by birth ?

Matthew 5:38-39 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye,
and a tooth for a tooth: {39} But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil:
but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other
also.
James 1:26 If a man seems to have religion and has no control over his
tongue but lets himself be tricked by what is false, this man's religion
is of no value.
James 1:27 The religion which is holy and free from evil in the eyes of
our God and Father is this: to take care of children who have no fathers
and of widows who are in trouble, and to keep oneself untouched by the
world.
Psalm 37:8 Put an end to your wrath and be no longer bitter; do not
give way to angry feeling which is a cause of sin.
Psalm 37:9 For the evil-doers will be cut off: but those who have faith
in the Lord will have the earth for their heritage.
Psalm 37:10 For in a short time the evil-doer will be gone: you will go
searching for his place, and it will not be there.
Psalm 37:11 But the gentle will have the earth for their heritage; they
will take their delight in peace without measure.

If he wasn't, it would be news to me.
To my knowledge, he was born Jewish in 37 AD
and his ancestry was both Levitical and royal.
He did later have Roman citizenship and took the
name, "Titus Flavius Josephus" ("Titus" and "Flavius"
coming from his patrons, of course).
Why? Does it matter? And if so, for what reason
does it matter? Just curious. :)

The info will help me to know the man and how he views his
world, his beliefs, his people, and how he responded to
external forces in his life. I want to see what it was like
to walk in his footsteps, see life as his people saw it, to
know a man I may never get to meet.

Well, he responded as a Jew. But at the same time,
we can rest assured, that he wasn't too hard on the
Romans, due to the desire to live. :)
But this would only mean that he toned down the
atrocities that the Romans committed and since
they are pretty horrible as he wrote them, we would
not even want to imagine some of the stuff that
went on during the tribulation.

Yes. I recieved the impression from some of his writngs that he
was born a jew, but a citizen of Rome, and it seemed that he
thought as both a jew and Roman. His words indicate a Roman
with a heart for the jewish people, and it seems believed in God
as well. I get the impression that he was drawn to Christ by more
that curiosity alone, and he demonstrated a conscience,
something I would think is rare for a Roman soldier.

Nero, Papa "Doc", Baby "Doc", Idi Amin Dada, Pol Pot,
Hitler, Stalin, Mengele....hell seems to have no shortage
of evil, but good is in very short supply.....

Yes. I recieved the impression from some of his writngs that he
was born a jew, but a citizen of Rome, and it seemed that he
thought as both a Jew and Roman.
His later writings would IMO surely have contained
some Roman influence, as far as his writing style.
But remember that his writings about the Jewish War
were right after he was captured and he was a first
hand witness to the events and still thinking purely
as a Jew.
His words indicate a Roman with a heart for
the jewish people, and it seems believed in God
as well. I get the impression that he was drawn

You're thinking he was a Roman and then a Jew.
When he wrote about the Jewish War, he was a
captive Jew, seeking not to be killed, by using
his writing skills for them.
As for Christ, I think he may have had some curiosity
and maybe even a fraction of belief to just some
small degree. But his idea of the Messiah was just as
the misdirected Pharisees and the Dispensationalists.
He/they look(ed) for a physical war winning Messiah.
and he demonstrated a conscience, something
I would think is rare for a Roman soldier.
He wasn't "a Roman soldier" though. Again, he was
a Jew first and played the role of historian for the
Romans to save his life and his own people, to be
able to record their history.
Of course, the longer he lived as a Roman citizen,
the more influenced he became, but he never totally
became Roman in his heart of hearts.
But this would only mean that he toned down the
atrocities that the Romans committed and since
they are pretty horrible as he wrote them, we would
not even want to imagine some of the stuff that
went on during the tribulation.

Sad, huh? Yes, Nero, the beast, the lawless one.
