ANDERSON, S.C. -- A woman from Georgia died when she was hit by four
vehicles on Interstate 85 on Thursday night as she tried to rescue her dog,
authorities said.
Investigators said that they believe Lou Ellena Hutgens, 68, was driving a
convertible north on I-85 in Anderson County at about 10:45 p.m.
The dog jumped out of the car when the woman stopped to put up the top up
near mile marker 26, investigators said.
Hutgens was in the middle lane of the highway when she was hit by a sport
utility vehicle, an 18-wheeler and two cars.
All of the vehicles stopped except the tractor-trailer, investigators said.
Hutgens was a resident of Dunwoody, Ga., near Atlanta, investigators said.
Hutgens' husband filed a missing persons report with the Dekalb County
Sheriff's office about an hour before he got a call from the coroner that
she had been hit. He said that his wife left their home Thursday afternoon,
saying she was going to take the dog to the veterinarian and that she would
be home about 5 p.m.
Investigators are trying to determine why Hutgens was so far from home. They
said it is possible that she may have gotten bad news from the vet and that
may have "set her off." Greenville County Coroner Greg Shore said that the
woman had some history of depression.
Troopers found the medical records of the dog, Shadow, in the car. The dog
had run away, but troopers were able to find and catch him.
Shore said that the dog was released to Anderson County Animal Control and
would be taken to a vet.
Hutgens' husband and grandson are on their way to Greenville to claim
Hutgens' remains and the dog

That's a sad story but I don't quite get how God did it. You may have
a point that God allows such things to occur or can't prevent them or
doesn't exist, but to go from that to "God did it" is a logical
fallacy. Why do you continue to pretend that you don't understand the
distinction?

Preventing something from happening, if it's possible, and causing it
to happen, are two different things.

Yes, but a "loving God" might be unable to prevent bad things from
happening. Who says otherwise? Religious dogma? That doesn't make
it so. It doesn't take too much thinking to realize that the earth is
a very small part of the entire universe, which is probably packed
with habitable planets. If this so-called God has to watch everything
everywhere, he might be too busy to prevent bad things from happening
all over the place, perhaps he's a tad incompetent, or perhaps he just
sets things in motion and lets them go as they will. In fact, doesn't
even the Bible claim that God more or less allows Man to stumble over
his own foibles? And why just worry about mankind? How about all the
baby animals that are killed off because they are easy prey? The
original poster's simplification of the dynamics of life and death is
rather glaring, even though I can sympathize with his sentiments and
often hold "God" responsible for what occurs in my own life. Still,
much of that sort of thinking simply doesn't make sense. It's
irrational.

There are natural laws which are inviolate. You may overdose on crack,
and die. Why you think it is a god's duty to stop you? The
responsibility is yours. The same goes for the woman stepping in front
of speeding cars.
