TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- With a deadline looming for two Canadians kidnapped
in Iraq, the family of one made an emotional plea for his life.
The kidnapper's threat to kill the hostages by Thursday prompted the family
of James Loney to make the plea in a news conference. The original deadline
set by the group calling itself the Swords of Righteousness was Thursday.
Al-Jazeera later said it was extended until Saturday.
Loney of Toronto and Harmeet Singh Sooden, formerly of Montreal; along with
Tom Fox, of Clearbrook, Virginia, and Briton Norman Kember of London are
members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams that were seized at gunpoint in
Baghdad on Nov. 26.
The previously unknown Swords of Righteousness Brigade accused the men of
being spies and threatened to kill them Thursday unless Iraqi prisoners held
at U.S.-and Iraqi-run detention facilities are freed.
The family said they were doing their best to keep their hopes alive, and
said they were pleased to see Loney looking well on video shown last week by
Al-Jazeera news.
"We are grateful that Jim appeared well cared for in the last video tape,
and we pray that that will continue," said his brother, Matthew.
Robin Buyers of Christian Peacemaker Teams said the group was investigating
reports of a new tape and wouldn't comment further until seeing it.
Family members said earlier that they were touched by the outpouring of
support for Loney, especially from Muslims around the world.
The Canadian Islamic Congress has sent an envoy to Iraq in the hopes of
facilitating their release. Representatives of other Muslim groups around
the world also have pleaded on behalf of the men. A radical Muslim preacher
being held in a British jail also called on the kidnappers to release the
four as an act of Islamic mercy.
Kathleen Weir, a sister, said Loney was in Iraq to help people.
Loney spent many years working with Toronto's homeless before joining
Christian Peacemaker Teams. The 41-year-old community worker had been
leading the group in Iraq before he was abducted.
"He feels he has to speak for those who are marginalized, for those he feels
that others have forgotten," Weir said. "He had to go. He wouldn't have been
happy if he didn't. We accept that."
Christian Peacemaker Teams has been working in Iraq since October 2002,
investigating allegations of abuse against Iraqi detainees by U.S. and Iraqi
forces. Its teams promote peaceful solutions in conflict zones.
"We want everyone to know how much we love our son, our brother, our uncle
and our friend. We continue to hope and pray for his safe release so that he
can return to us and continue this important work," Weir said.
Weir said Loney looked so happy to be helping in Iraq in pictures he sent
prior to his abduction.
"We know that this is what is important to him," she said. "He gains
strength from that and we gain strength from the fact that this is his
life's work."
