group of British scientists has achieved a major breakthrough in stem
cell technology, growing the world's first artificial human liver in
a laboratory, using stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood. The
achievement has been largely ignored, however, by North American
mainstream media.
The UK Daily Mail reported yesterday on the work of Newcastle
University researchers Nico Forraz and Colin McGuckin, who have
successfully grown 'mini-livers' capable of being used to test new
drugs and, in future years, of providing life-saving treatment to
patients in need of liver transplants.
Researchers predict the science, with none of the ethical concerns
associated with the use of embryonic stem cells, will be used to repair
damaged livers within the next five years, and within 15 years whole
artificial livers will be grown to be used in transplants.
No mainstream media source in either the United States or Canada,
however, has reported on the achievement thus far. Leading bioethics
critic Wesley J. Smith, writing for the Weekly Standard, said the
absence of press coverage indicates just how strong the media bias is
for stem cell research using human embryos.
"A story that doesn't validate the stem-cell mantra that embryonic
stem cells offer the "best hope" for future cures isn't worth
much attention," Smith wrote. "Even the most important adult or
umbilical cord blood stem-cell breakthroughs usually receive only
minor, inside-the-paper coverage."
"This is the primary reason why so many people still don't know
about the many advances being made on a continual basis in human
research with ethical, adult and umbilical cord blood stem cells."
Research using embryonic stem cells is highly controversial because it
requires the destruction of embryos in order to "harvest" the
cells. Further, to this date there has no success in using embryonic
cells to treat any disease or disorder.
In contrast, the use of adult stem cells or of cells harvested from
umbilical cord blood shortly after the birth of a baby have already
been used successfully to treat multiple conditions, including spinal
injury and blindness.
"[I]f this new breakthrough had been accomplished with embryonic stem
cells instead of umbilical cord blood stem cells, the headlines would
have been enormous," Smith predicted. "Instead, we hear the sound
of silence--thanks to the news blockade that doesn't care much about
stem-cell breakthroughs unless they come from destroyed embryos."
An online news search shows several alternative media sources covering
the story along with coverage by press in Australia, India, Qatar,
South Africa and Turkey, but the material is "conspicuously absent"
from the Associated Press, the Canadian Press, Reuters, or any of the
dominant media outlets in North America.

Australia Lawmakers, Pro-Life Groups Upset at Human Cloning Vote

Canberra, Australia (LifeNews.com) -- Lawmakers and pro-life groups are
upset that the Australia parliament gave the final approval to a
measure overturning the nation's ban on all forms of human cloning. The
proposal allowed human cloning for research purposes even though the
creation and destruction of human life for their stem cells hasn't
helped patients.
After the vote, Nationals Senate Leader Ron Boswell said most
Australians would be horrified to learn the details of what parliament
approved.
"It certainly doesn't reflect the community that I live in," Senator
Boswell told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. "I would think if
people knew the details of it they would be absolutely horrified."
NSW Liberal senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells agreed and said it was a
sad day for Australia that the country will now allow the cloning and
killing of human beings for research.
"I think this debate has been led in a very misleading and deceptive
manner," she told the newspaper. "I think the Australian public have
not really been told what precisely is in this bill."
Fierravanti-Wells said the bill also allows scientists to use cells
from babies who are victims of abortion and to take human eggs for
research from dead women.
Dr. David van Gend, National Director of Australians for Ethical Stem
Cell Research, told LifeNews.com he's also concerned about the outcome
of the vote.
"This tragic and shameful vote has been a victory for 'con science'
over conscience," he said.
"The moral damage to society has now been done by approving a
laboratory subclass of human young, created only for exploitation," van
Gend said.
"But now that we have cut ourselves loose from the essential ethical
principle - that no human life can be exploited for the benefit of
other human lives - there is no way to get a grip on the slippery
slope to further desecrations," he explained.
House members knew the outcome would be in favor of the bill and
decided to call of a request for the actual vote tally of each member.
The last vote taken on the bill prior to its final passage was 82 to 62
in favor of it.
An August survey found a majority of Australians oppose human cloning.
That survey of 1,200 people, conducted by Sexton Marketing, found 51
percent of Australians opposed human cloning, 30 percent supported it
and 12 percent had no opinion on the issue.
The August poll found ten times more Australians prefer adult stem cell
research to studies involving embryonic stem cells.
Assuming each type of research brought equal benefits to patients, 40
percent preferred using adult stem cells and just 4 percent preferred
using embryonic stem cell research, according to the August poll. Some
51 percent had no preference.
The Sexton poll also found that 48 percent of those surveyed would
change the way they vote in the next election depending on how their
local MPs stood on the issue of human cloning.

Ukraine babies in stem cell probe

Disturbing video footage of post-mortem examinations on dismembered
tiny bodies raises serious questions about what happened to them.
Ukraine has become the self-styled stem cell capital of the world.
There is a trade in stem cells from aborted foetuses, amid unproven
claims they can help fight many diseases.
But now there are claims that stem cells are also being harvested from
live babies.

The BBC has spoken to mothers from the city of Kharkiv who say they
gave birth to healthy babies, only to have them taken by maternity
staff.
In 2003 the authorities agreed to exhume around 30 bodies of foetuses
and full-term babies from a cemetery used by maternity hospital number
six.
One campaigner was allowed into the autopsy to gather video evidence.
She has given that footage to the BBC and Council of Europe.
In its report, the Council describes a general culture of trafficking
of children snatched at birth, and a wall of silence from hospital
staff upwards over their fate.
The pictures show organs, including brains, have been stripped - and
some bodies dismembered.
A senior British forensic pathologist says he is very concerned to see
bodies in pieces - as that is not standard post-mortem practice.
It could possibly be a result of harvesting stem cells from bone
marrow.

Chinese Regime Admits To Organ Harvesting From Prisoners

published an interview regarding organ harvesting in China. For the
first time, China's Ministry of Health spokesman Mao Qunan admitted to
the practice of organ harvesting from executed prisoners in China,
which he had publicly denied before. However, Mao evaded key evidences
of organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners and denied that
accusation.

Why Falun Gong members?
They are healthy and make prime targets of organ removal.
People from the unborn to adults have become nothing more then body
parts to the global governments and business. They say look at that
while they butcher the unborn, that would never happen in our country.
While they may not be butchering humans outside the womb, their
citizens are going to those countries for transplants, being
accessories to the murder of those people's body parts they have.
How many murdered unborn/born human blood will satisfy these people and
the governments that allow this to happen?
