POISONING THE SPIRIT?
To Read: Exodus 39,40
To Know:
"O LORD, who shall sojourn in thy tent? Who shall dwell on thy holy hill?"
(Psalm 15:1)
Heaven is home to God. Eden was heaven in miniature; there God lived with
the man and woman he had made. In the aftermath of sin, God began a
reclamation project. The Bible calls this project salvation. This is good
news. Salvation is a redemptive act. Gospel means good news. God gave Israel
another Eden. That Eden was the Promised Land. The ultimate Promised Land
will be the earth itself.
When the Psalmist writes of sojourning in the Lord's tent it is a symbol for
living in heaven. Who is welcome in the tent of God? Psalm 15 explains: "He
who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth from his
heart; who does not slander with his tongue, and does no evil to his friend,
nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor; in whose eyes a reprobate is
despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt
and does not change; who does not put out his money at interest, and does
not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never
be moved." (15:2-5)
Forgiveness is meant to transform us. Grace aims to remake and mold us into
the image of Christ. Cheap grace is forgiveness that allows us to sin with
impunity. The grace of Christ is not cheap. It is grace that takes our sin
so seriously that Jesus shed his blood that we might be forgiven. Today the
Church is heaven on earth. God lives in us. Here is where we learn to walk
blamelessly with the Lord.
