Priest sent packing following pulpit exposé

Paris - A Catholic priest who revealed the sexual misdeeds of members
of his congregation from the pulpit has been ordered onto an
indefinite religious retreat by his bishop.
The parish priest, of Collioure, a picturesque coastal town close to
the French border with Spain, announced during a Sunday sermon that he
had "excommunicated" several regular church-goers.
He went on to state that a man sitting in church that day with his
wife was an adulterer and was no longer welcome at mass. Although the
priest did not name the alleged sinner, everyone in the congregation
knew his identity and the man later made a formal complaint to the
police and the bishop.
One parishioner recalled: "The priest took out a paper he had prepared
and said he was excommunicating such and such a person because he was
the lover of such and such a person. He said there was no point in
this man coming to church on Sunday on his wife's arm to swallow
communion wafers by packets of ten while he was leading a double life
during the week".
The priest went on to describe the sins of several other unnamed
worshippers. "By all accounts he knew what he was talking about. You
just had to look at some of the faces in church," the parishioner
said.
The priest, a Dutchman in his 50s, has been sent on retreat by the
diocese of Perpignan to a monastery over the border in Spain. He is
said to be suffering from depression.
Some parishioners say the priest was right to denounce the hypocrisy
of regular church-goers. Others say he was setting himself up as a
one-man inquisition.
