The two are held to different standards. It is OK for an encyclopedia
to contain errors, as it is merely a record -- and not a perfect one at
that -- of human knowledge, which is itself imperfect. If Bible
contains errors like that, however, then the Bible has lost its value.
Depends on which group of people though.
I have heard many things which Gandhi spoke in *Great Wisdom* and I feel
that man was inspired by God, in his words. But he made errors, as all
humans do, I'm sure.
Some Christians say the Bible is without contradiction or error in it, out
of ignorance. Others meanwhile, call them discrepancies, and continue to
believe in the Bible as the Word of God, (retaining its spiritual value). As
R.C. Sproul wrote in "A Reason to Believe", he stated there are in fact
discrepancies in the Bible... but with more research... maybe they'll find
answers to those things. (And true, some things can have answers given for
the problem verses in the Bible, while others are beyond any sensible
explanation). e.g., some have explained the dung in the bread, that it meant
to be cooked with dung (the dung as fuel for the fire), and then they point
out that was only normal for the people of the ancient near east... and in
the scripture, God tells the prophet "I have given thee cow's dung in place
of man's dung.." I ask this simple question: If it was only normal to cook
with cow's dung (anyway)... what punishment was being given to the
Israelites?
They cooked with dung anyway...
Problem verse, which everyone has failed to answer.
