Re: demons
Demon possession seems to be popularly associated with mental illness.
Since the only instance in the New Testament of demon possession,
unless I've missed some, which could be associated that way is the
Gerasene I'm wondering why.
Most mentions of demonisation in the NT are to do with physical
illness, paranormal knowledge or the symptoms are simply not given. So
why this link?
Hello,
True, one could attribute some of the symptoms of demon possession
with mental problems of some sort. So those with faith, just like the
miracles reported in the Bible, have to take the inspired NT writer's
word that the cause of the affliction was by a demon or demons, and
not by natural causes. (2 Ti 3:16)
Jesus even distinquished between the two at Mr 1:34,
"and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out
many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew
who he was." (NIV)
Sincerely, James
