Re: does God lack perspective ?
Remember the bishop of Durham who said that we didn't need to believe
the virgin birth and that it might not be true ? Then a few days later
the cathedral was hit by lightning and nearly burnt down.

Well, I was doing some thinking - if this bolt was from God as a sort
of punishment or warning from God - then I need to ask the following:

The nasty people who murder, kill, rape, abuse, make deliberate
decisions that cause their own people to starve, get shot and get
killed in explosions are not so bad as to get a lightning bolt from God
- but someone who doesn't really believe the bible does get a lightning
bolt !

What's worse - a murderer or someone who doesn't believe every single
part of the Bible ?
Who causes the most pain in the world ?

and if God's reading this please don't zap me with a bolt - it's just
a question.

Hello,
I am glad you said "if" this bolt was from God. The word "if" means
that you are talking hypothetically.
When the God of the Bible starts to judge wicked ones, you will know
it. Remember the Bible accounts of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the great
Deluge? Or read all the accounts of God's judgements in the OT on the
wicked Canaanites, etc.
The Bible says that God is not doing individual judging of all the
wicked at this time. Rather, He has set aside a "day" in the future to
do such things. Ac 17:31,
"For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the
man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising
him from the dead." (NIV)
If as you say a lightening bolt hit some church, lightening bolts also
hit cows, outhouses, and Burger King signs, etc. The explanation for
such occurrences is not only weather physics, but also Ec 9:11,
"I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the
swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or
wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance
happen to them all." (NIV)
Yes, "time and chance" happens to everyone, including lightening bolts
hitting the churches preachers use to deliver their true or false
sermons.
Sincerely, James
