Re: help me understand the trinity??? please
Hello
My name is Charlie, I am a Christian. I believe in the father / creator God,
and also believe in Jesus Christ as My savior and that he is the son of God.
When I pray I acknowledge both the father " God" and give thanks and love to
Jesus as my savior. But My problem is tying them both together as a single
person - or seeing Jesus as GOD one in the same. Especially when the bible
says things like 'no one gets to the father except through me" or 'iam the
door" and then the father says ' this man Jesus is my son -our savior. I
love them Both but don't understand the combining of the two to be the same
person. Can some one help me understand please???
Thanks in advance
Charlie
Charlie,
Some say the Trinity is a 'mystery', just believe it. Others have some
Scriptures they say supports it, such as John 10:30 and the King James
Bible at 1 Jo 5:7, etc. But here are some indisputable facts.
Interestingly the word "Trinity" is not found in the Bible. No, that
doesn't disprove it conclusively, but it doesn't help the case of
Trinitarians either.
Also Jesus himself never came right out and in simple words said
anything like 'I am God', or 'I am the Father', etc. He is always
referred to as God's Son, or the Son of God etc. (yes Trinitarians
come up with some Scriptures that they interpret as Jesus claiming to
be God, but there is no clear cut Scriptures saying so)
And keep in mind that the Trinity doctrine was created by men long
AFTER the Bible was written. Thus it is post-Biblical in origin.
So again let's briefly review those few facts:
1. the word Trinity is not found in the Bible anywhere.
2. Jesus never clearly said 'I am God' or something similar.
3. the Trinity doctrine is a doctrine of men created long after the
Bible was written.
That being the case, then either one must accept the Trinity just
because they tell you, or they must think they have good evidence from
the Scriptures themselves. (if you want some of theirs explained,
please just ask)
But if the Trinity is a doctrine fabricated by men, then the Bible
should not support such a false concept. Remember, the whole Bible
claims to be inspired by God. 2 Ti 3:16,
"All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for
refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness." (NAB)
Thus if there 'appears' to be a Scriptures supporting the Trinity,
there cannot be other ones discounting it. You can't have it both
ways.
Here are a few verses to consider. If Jesus was God, then God must
suffer from a split personality or something, since one part of Him
doesn't know what another part is doing. Mr 13:32,
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven,
nor the Son, but only the Father." (NIV)
I for one, believe God is 100% mentally stable. The Bible describes
God as a "rock" (De 32:4), so His mind is not fragmented into other
personalities that don't know what the others are doing etc.
Also the Bible tells us that Jesus was created, but that God always
existed:
Jesus created- Col 1:15, "He is the image of the invisible God, the
firstborn of all creation." (NASB)
God always lived- Ps 90:2, "Before the mountains were born or you
brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting
you are God." (NIV)
Also, Jesus himself plainly said that God was superior to him. Joh
14:28,
"You heard me say, `I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If
you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the
Father is greater than I." (NIV)
And just one more example expanding on the last one. After Jesus was
resurrected and went back to Heaven to be with God, one would expect
Jesus and God to be equal again. (like the Trinity doctrine says) But
notice what Jesus' hand-picked apostle, Paul, said at 1 Co 11:3,
"Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and
the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God." (NIV)
Yes, God is STILL the head of Christ, even after Christ went back to
Heaven.
I hope this has helped you to at least see that the Trinity doctrine
has a lot of 'holes' in it that need to be plugged if it is going to
be believed. I for one, have never seen any good 'plugs' for those
holes. Genuine Christians must go by the doctrines the Bible teaches,
not the doctrines men teach. (such as the post-Biblical Trinity
doctrine)
Sincerely, James

Very interesting facts but they are not useful for solving any "holy
mysteries". I would suppose that most people who accept the idea of the
Holy Trinity do not claim to be able to understand it, nor do they say
that they even need to be able to explain it, neither to themselves nor
to others. They just accept it by faith as a "holy mystery". A "holy
mystery" is good enough for anyone who can go with that. For those who
cannot go with that, that's OK, and they should not be asking themselves
any questions about that because those kinds of questions do not matter.
