gambling, a sin? (Examples are "tounament chess", "tournament poker",
"bridge with entry fees", "bingo", "life, health and property
insurance", "futures market", "stock market", you name it.)

Hello,
For those who follow God's word the Holy Bible, it is what the Bible
says about gambling that is the most important.
The Bible does not discuss gambling in detail, but it does provide us
with principles that help us determine how God views gambling. (just
as the Bible does not discuss making copies of copyrighted software,
but we can find Bible principles that would cover it)
Experience has shown that gambling reflects greed. The Bible strongly
condemns greed, warning that 'no greedy person would have any
inheritance in God's kingdom.' (Ephesians 5:5)
Gambling is used by some as a means of feeding their pride. One survey
conducted with compulsive gamblers showed that 94 percent considered
gambling to be an "ego building activity," and 92 percent said they
felt like a "big shot" when they gambled. Yet, God says:
"Self-exaltation and pride . . . I have hated." (Pr 8:13)
Gambling may also induce laziness, since it seems like an easy way to
make money without the effort involved in working. But God's Word
clearly incites Christians to be diligent and do hard work. (Ephesians
4:28)
Moreover, what they call luck is so important to some gamblers that
they become obsessed with it, making it their god. This is similar to
the Bible account about men who were "setting in order a table for the
god of Good Luck." Because of their idolatrous action, they were
destined "to the sword." (Isa 65:11, 12)
As you can see, there are many Bible principles showing that a
Christian would not want to be a gambler. (much of the material above
was taken from the 1994 Awake! magazine, 8/8.)

I'm not sure about the logic there. Many keep fit fanatics would say the
same about exercise - ego building, sense of being special if you win a
race, etc., but I don't think that makes it a sin.

Again, unless you also stand against all sorts of labour saving devices
like washing machines or microwaves, I think it's being inconsistant to
use this argument against gambling.

That's more a comment on becoming overly obsessed with anything and
'making a god of it' than gambling. It doesn't say anything against
gambling in moderation.
I'm not saying gambling is (or isn't) a sin, I'm just discussing your
points. I don't really have a position on it personally.
As you can see, there are many Bible principles showing that a
Christian would not want to be a gambler. (much of the material above
