Maybe they lost their resolution to protect their people-- yet again.

Seems to me if Israel wants to take Arafat out now, the best option is to
capture the *****
to put him on trial. Let a jury decide if he's guilty and what should be done
with him.
Adam
I think the reason they won't do that is because it would set a precedent and it
scares Ariel Sharon.

As far as Hamas is concerned Sharon has already crossed the line.
Knowing this they the Jews of Israel wants the world to think that when
Sharon is assassinated, then they will say we don't do such things. Then
eliminate Arafat.
But we shall see.
Because Bush has his hands full with his own *****-ups.

You don't have TheAnswer, for you are part of the problem. Nuclear

Maybe Grant surrendered to Lee. It all depends on how you perceive it.
There was an ongoing conflict from the 1948

They didn't scheme to invade and occupy the Suez Canal. They were already

As part of Egyptian President Nasser's nationalist agenda, he took
control of
the Suez Canal zone away from the British and French companies which owned

He blocked the Straits of Tiran...Hmmm...
the narrow waterway that is Israel's only outlet
to the Red Sea.
Israel's only outlet to the Red Sea (effectively crippling Israel
economically)...Hmmm...
Israel and Egypt had clashed repeatedly since their 1948 war as
Egypt allowed and encouraged groups of Palestinian fighters to attack
Israel
from Egyptian territory.
Egypt was allowing terrorists to attack Israel from inside Egypt, Hmmm...
[And please note, Caiaphas, Israel did not have Gaza or the West Bank then,
so why were they being attacked by *Palestinians*?] (Which is a misnomer,
BTW, since the *Palestinians* didn't exist until 1967. Until then, they were

In response, Israeli forces constantly made
cross-border raids in retaliation.
Retaliation... Do you know what this word means? It refers to taking revenge
on someone who has attacked you, i.e. Egypt was allowing terrorists to
attack Israel...so Israel responded. But you think Israel shouldn't respond.
You think Israel should have allowed the terrorism to go unchecked without
any response. Just as you think the Israeli borders should be opened to
terrorists now and that Israel should not respond to terrorists now.

| Title: Re: 1956 Egypt-Israel War ... |
16 Sep 2003 03:01:14 PM |
|
|
And here is another description of the 1956 war ....
The 1956 War
From 1949 to 1956 the armed truce between Israel and the Arabs, enforced
in part by the UN forces, was punctuated by raids and reprisals. Among the world
powers, the United States, Great Britain, and France sided with Israel, while
the Soviet Union supported Arab demands. Tensions mounted during 1956 as Israel
became convinced that the Arabs were preparing for war. The nationalization of
the Suez Canal by Egypt’s Gamal Abdal Nasser in July, 1956, resulted in the
further alienation of Great Britain and France, which made new agreements with
Israel. 5
On Oct. 29, 1956, Israeli forces, directed by Moshe Dayan, launched a
combined air and ground assault into Egypt’s Sinai peninsula. Early Israeli
successes were reinforced by an Anglo-French invasion along the canal. Although
the action against Egypt was severely condemned by the nations of the world, the
cease-fire of Nov. 6, which was promoted by the United Nations with U.S. and
Soviet support, came only after Israel had captured several key objectives,
including the Gaza strip and Sharm el Sheikh, which commanded the approaches to
the Gulf of Aqaba. Israel withdrew from these positions in 1957, turning them
over to the UN emergency force after access to the Gulf of Aqaba, without which
Israel was cut off from the Indian Ocean, had been guaranteed.

From 1949 to 1956 the armed truce between Israel and the Arabs, enforced in part

the United States, Great Britain, and France sided with Israel, while the Soviet
Union supported Arab demands. Tensions mounted during 1956 as Israel became
convinced that the Arabs were preparing for war. The nationalization of the Suez
Canal by Egypt's Gamal Abdal Nasser in July, 1956, resulted in the further
alienation of Great Britain and France, which made new agreements with Israel.
On Oct. 29, 1956, Israeli forces, directed by Moshe Dayan, launched a combined
air and ground assault into Egypt's Sinai peninsula. Early Israeli successes
were reinforced by an Anglo-French invasion along the canal. Although the action
against Egypt was severely condemned by the nations of the world, the cease-fire

|
On October 29, 1956, the second Arab-Israeli War (also referred to as "The Suez
War") broke out with Israel, Great Britain, and France arrayed against Egypt and
aiming to depose Nasser.
Israel was motivated by three chief factors. First, it considered the
Egyptian-Czech arms deal Nasser had negotiated the year before as a dangerous
shift in the balance of power in the region. Second, Nasser had nationalized
the Suez Canal after the U.S. in July reversed itself and withdrew its offer of
a loan to build the Aswan Dam. Third, Nasser had blockaded the Gulf of Aqaba
between the Tiran Straits and the Red Sea. Great Britain, whose influence in
the region had been on the wane since the end of World War II, saw the conflict
as a way to regain lost ground. The French were angry with Nasser for his
support of the insurrection in Algeria, France's colony. Britain's Prime
Minister Eden and French Premier Mollet regarded Nasser as a dangerous
demagogue. France, Britain, and Israel hit upon a plan (The Sèvres Protocol,
Oct. 24, 1956) whereby Israel would seize the canal. Britain and France would
then demand that both Israel and Egypt withdraw from the canal zone. When Egypt
refused, as expected, Britain and France would intervene and force the Egyptians
out.
Israel initiated hostilities on October 29 by invading Gaza and the Sinai and
then moved into the Suez Canal zone on October 30. The United States, furious
with Israel, Britain, and France and motivated even more by fears that the
Soviet Union would be drawn into the fray, sponsored a U.N. resolution
condemning the attack, which was passed on November 2. Meanwhile, British and
French troops, the ultimatum to Israel and Egypt having been ignored as
expected, were busy trying to take control of the canal zone. Hostilities ended
on November 6 after a ceasefire took effect. In December, a U.N. emergency
force was stationed in the area. The Suez was returned to Egypt. (See Kirsten
Schulze, The Arab-Israeli Conflict (London: Longman, 1999), 22ff.).
While Nasser was the loser militarily, he was the big winner politically. His
stature in the Arab world rose sharply, quickly dwarfing other leaders like
Jordan's King Hussein and Iraq's Nuri al-Said who were perceived to be too
beholden to Western interests. Finally, this war marked the end of British and
French influence in the region.

Welp Cindy, as most of these accounts show, Israel "became convinced that the
Arabs were preparing for war" and decided to STRIKE FIRST. Satisfied?

capture the *****
to put him on trial. Let a jury decide if he's guilty and what should be

Nah, definitely kill him; Israel doesn't have a death penalty.

True, but he would be removed from power and he would die of natural causes. It would prevent

Nonsense.
Though Israel abolished the death penalty for what are termed ordinary
crimes in 1971, it is one of fifteen nations where the death penalty is
still valid for those who commit what are termed exceptional crimes,
such as crimes committed in circumstances such as wartime or for crimes
that would primarily be covered by military law.
The other nations where this is the rule are Argentina, Brazil, Canada,
Cyprus, El Salvador, Fiji, Malta, Mexico, Nepal, Paraguay, Peru,
Seychelles, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The law no longer applies in Fiji.
George Speight was sentenced to death for initiating and leading the coup 3
years ago, but his sentence was commuted to life and the death penalty is
no longer an option even for treason.

The Treason Act of 2003 states that anyone guilty will receive a life
sentence. It also states that: -
"No one shall suffer death for high treason unless it is to prevent him
from committing the same."
That seems a touch vague to me, but I would read that as saying either
the death penalty can be instituted to prevent a person from committing
high treason or to prevent them from killing someone else in an act of
high treason. The second option is the more likely, though it sounds
retroactive. Any clarification would be appreciated as I cannot even
find clarification of the Home Office web site.
The 1351 Treason Act is actually still in force. There was a call to use
that particular statute against any of Her Majesties subjects that
fought for the Taliban.
