Re: Matthew 19:12
12. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from
*their* mother's womb and there are some eunuchs, which were
made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made
themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heavens sake. He that
is able to receive it, let him receive it.
Anybody want to dig in to that one?
Hello,
The Greek word for "eunuchs" used here at Mt 19:12 is "eunoukhos".
And when used in a literal sense means a human male who has been
castrated. (see Strong's Ref. # 2135)
If Jesus thought of "eunuchs" as meaning only castrated males, then
there would be a problem, since Jesus never promoted causing physical
harm to oneself. Rather he said to 'love yourself'. (Mt 19:19)
But the context itself shows that is not what Jesus meant when he said
some people made themselves eunuchs.
The subject being discussed here is marriage and singleness (Mt
19:9,10). And since Jesus many times talked in parables (Mr 4:34), we
should not be surprised if Jesus used a word which meant one thing,
but applied it in a different way. And that is what he does here.
When Jesus said that some people make themselves "eunuchs", he meant
that they chose to remain single, instead of getting married. Because
those who are single can devote more time to serving God, than married
people. So Jesus told them "He that is able to receive it, let him
receive it". In other words, let those who can live with singleness,
do so.
Sincerely, James
