Re: on faith
Im not trolling here, but I expect some people will react as though I
am. However, into the breech:
Ive been pondering the meaning of faith. I got into a discussion about
this with someone last night, and it left me with a number of questions
I am not equipped to answer.
Hello,
I would like to comment on your first question.
How exactly do people manage to believe in something without any proof?
The Bible isnt proof, it is something that was written by men, and
people have faith that it was divinely inspired, but proof it is not.
Perhaps you have been listening to the wrong people. The Bible has a
lot of proof that is was not from men. For example, it has many
prophecies written long in advance of their fulfillment. And in one
case, it even names the conqueror (Cyrus) long before he was ever
born. (see Isa 44;28)
Also, the Bible is accurate when it mentions scientific matters. (and
keep in mind, the Bible was written thousands of years before 'modern
science' ever came into being) Around 2000 years before men knew the
earth was round and men believed the earth rested on the back of a
giant turtle etc, a Hebrew prophet wrote in Isaiah 40:22,
"He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,..." (NIV)
The Hebrew word used here for "circle" is "hhug" which also has the
meaning of "sphere". Other Bible translations, therefore, say, "the
globe of the earth" (Douay Version) and, "the round earth." (Moffatt).
Also, out of the Book of Job comes the statement at Job 26:7,
"He stretches out the north over the void, and hangs the earth upon
nothing." (RSV)
So the Bible in its poetic style, describes the earth as a circular
sphere 'hanging' upon "nothing" (floating) in a "void" (space). Sound
familiar?
Thus there is plenty of reason to at least consider the POSSIBILITY
that the Bible had information given to it that is not from human
sources.
Also, the Bible does not promote credulity. If it did, it should have
no complaints when people believe in false gods and religions, just
because they are told they are true. But the Bible does complain about
worshipping false gods etc. Thus the Bible wants you to check it out
and verify as much as you can. As the apostle Paul put it at1 Th 5:21,
"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." (KJV)
Sincerely, James

How do people believe in something so absolutely that they are willing
to die for it, to impose it on other people by the sword (historically
speaking), to change their lives for it, and to judge others by
it....based only on an unshakable belief in something that there is no
proof of at all? Why?
(Yes, AOK, I know you will now accuse me of not being a Christian and
possibly even of being a demon, but this is not aimed at you, so please
refrain, k thx)
My religious beliefs are in a state of flux at the moment, having been
seriously shaken by some recent events in my life and Im hoping that
perhaps some reasoned discussion of this will help.

Jehovah Witness: The Basic Christian Response
As far as the Jehovah's Witness claim that the NWT is the only true
interpretation of the Bible, the Christian response is that no
religious leader or religious organization can claim exclusive control
or possession of the true interpretation of the Bible. Through the
Holy Spirit, all Christians are capable of interpreting and
understanding the Holy Bible. As far as the Jehovah's Witness claim
that the WBTS is the only way to God and salvation, the Christian
response is that all people who have accepted the free gift of Jesus
Christ as their Lord and Savior are saved. Salvation is "by grace
through faith" in Jesus Christ alone. No amount of works or membership
in any religious group is required for eternal life with God.

***Baloney! The Orthodox church is the original Church and its
interpretation alone is the Truth. The Church is the Body of Christ and
Christ's interpretation is not wrong!!!
Through the
Holy Spirit, all Christians are capable of interpreting and
understanding the Holy Bible.
***LOL! this is why 10 people can have 10 different interpretations on a
single passage of Scripture.

***Picking and choosing which Bible verses afre good and which are bad?
LOL!

FYI - I was responding to someone who
appears to belong to the JW cult.
As far as I know the Orthodox Church
is not a cult and Orthodox people do
think for themselves.

Ac 17:11 - These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in
that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched
the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
