Re: SHOULD CHRISTIANS BE 'POLITICAL'?

Hello,
Simply put, no.
Genuine Christians go by Jesus' words, who said at Joh 17:14,
"I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they
are not of the world any more than I am of the world." (NIV)
But is that just some misinterpretation of Scripture? What about the
early Christians, those closest to the NT writings? How did they view
political participation, and even military service, after hearing
Jesus' words?
Professor Robert L.Wilken in "The Christians as the Romans Saw Them"
wrote, "Christians not only refused [Roman] military service but they
would not accept public office nor assume any responsibility for the
governing of the cities".
Edward Gibbon in "History of Christianity" wrote concerning
Christians, "refused to take any active part in the civil
administration or the military defence of the empire,..it was
impossible that the Christians, without renouncing a more sacred duty,
could assume the character of soldiers, of magistrates, or of
princes.".
Heckel and Sigman in "-On the Road to Civilization, A World History"
wrote, "Early Christianity was little understood and was regarded with
little favor by those who ruled the pagan world. . . .Christians
refused to share certain duties of Roman citizens. . . . They would
not hold political office."
Thus real Christians today, just like those early Christians, remain
neutral as to political involvement.
Sincerely, James

Hi James,
This country was started by Christians (Only) it was said to worship
God the way you choose, this was the first mistake It should have stayed
Christian (Only) now we have all the other religions which should be
outlawed with all the otther Gods like Mary Budah Alah ect. if you dont
belive in the Son of God and pray to His Father(Only) even the Jews don't do
that , we should have stayed political but ....but it's too late for that
Love, Jack

I'll agree, because it explains why the U.S. Government is
the most Anti-Christian government in world history: since,
as you say, no real Christians today have entered politics;
for, if they had, government wouldn't be so Anti-Christian.

There may be a few governments more anti-Christian than the US. China comes
to mind.
What is a _real Christian_ anyway? Somebody too chicken to sign his name in
a newsgroup?
