Only if you assume most Satanists really believe in Satan. I can't
speak for all of us, but I embrace Satanism as an "anti" religion.
To me, Satanism represents the opposite of xianity. I don't worship
Satan, and although I believe in God, my conception of God is far
different from the xian god and I don't worship him/her/it/them
either. Satanists call whatever is out there "Satan" to distinguish
it from the traditional god of xianity. Although some Satanists
are big on rituals, many others feel they are just silly, as I do.
I don't call myself an atheist because I am not, and nonbelief in
a god is really no different from belief in one and therefore
atheism is just as much a religion as xianity. Agnostic doesn't
seem to fit either, as I'm not really in doubt. More than trying
to describe my personal religious belief, I am trying to describe
my opposition to xianity. So "Satanist" fills that role quite
nicely. "Atheist" or "agnostic" simply don't carry the same shock
value as "satanist." A xian may be able to mentally tolerate the
presence of an atheist or agnostic. But no xian can possibly
handle the presence of someone they believe worships the rival of
their god. No matter that we Satanists don't really believe in
Satan, xians are simply unable to comprehend this idea and as soon
as they hear "Satanist" they imagine the usual devil worship,
sacrificing kitty cats and even babies, drinking blood, etc. and are
always on edgearound you. I had so much fun at my last job when a
Jeezus freek started working there. Then came Columbine and he
literally blamed me for it and a few days later he couldn't take it
anymore and quit.
