Re: The same God?
Much of the debate on the relationship between Muslims and Christians
is based on the belief that we worship the same God. Maybe any Muslims
who are reading this n.g. (I presume there may be some!) might care to
comment (in an appropriate manner) on the key differences between the
Islamic and Christian views of God?
Steve Cleary
Steve,
You will no doubt find many of them who claim it is the same God. And
that should not be surprising since they do accept parts of the Bible
as valid.
It is similar with 'Christendom'. (all religions professing to be
Christian, as one dictionary defines the word) They also all claim to
serve the same God, as well as His Son, Jesus. Yet there are a wide
variety of beliefs from that group.
In the latter group, what is the deciding factor of whether or not
their claims meet up to the truth, is if they really obey the God they
profess to serve.
For example, God told His Son to say at Mt 5:44,
"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute
you," (NASB)
But when most of Christendom many times supports the wars of the
countries they reside in, are they really following their professed
leader Jesus? Notice what Jesus wants from his servants. Lu 6:46,
"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (NIV)
Thus, many may claim to serve the same God of the Bible (even the
Muslims), but their actions will determine if what they say is true or
not.
Sincerely, James

Are you surprised seeing that the Bible portrays and condones far more
violence and intolerance than peace?
There are only a few short versus that encourage peace and love. That is not
enough.
One wonders what was really on the Bible god's mind, and why Jesus was so
terse and evasive with his teachings, yet so exclusivist and lofty minded
about himself.

The above might have been 'claimed' by a human scribe a few generations
later,
that is the closest we will ever get. No god ever goes on record factually
of ever saying anything.
What does that tell us about humanity?
Of course there are Prophets by the handful claiming in front of their
admirers that they spoke with and a direct link with a god.
What does that tell us about Prophets?
Frankly it tells us they are or were, without exception, 'charlatans and
liars'.
'Strong stuff" you may say !
Well I say "Prove me wrong"

That is because we humans made all of our gods up.
You know that of course,
you may not want to accept it,
so possibly you won't.

A Muslim friend of mine told me recently that he saw Islam as superseding
Christianity as Christianity is seen as superseding Judaism. They are,
to him, a natural progression.
