Re: Theological Question: Nicene Creed |

Re: Theological Question: Nicene Creed
Folks,
A chap clling himself "Fr. Laurence" signed my web site guest book Saturday
with the following statement: "Why is the Heresy in the English rendering of
the Nicene Creed 'He arose AGAIN according to the scritures.....' AGAIN is
not found in Greek, Russian or Slavonic. Where does this
come from; perhaps the Book of Common Prayer!"
My Carpatho-Russian prayer book shows the word "again" in the creed, but
there are Orthodox web sites that have the complete text of the Divine
Liturgy and the word "again" is missing from the Creed. "Again" indicates
that Christ rose from the dead twice.
Any thoughts?
Al
Al,
Yes, don't rely upon non-Biblical sources for the establishment of
spiritual doctrines. Go directly to the Bible. For example 1 Co 15:4,
"that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to
the Scriptures, " (NIV)
Notice there is no use of the word 'again' or any such idea showing a
second resurrection. No, the Bible is clear, Jesus died and was raised
up just "ONCE". 1 Pe 3:18,
"For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but
made alive by the Spirit, " (NIV)
Sincerely, James

Hello Al:
If one considers the complete passage as a whole, rather than
considering each word individually, he may realize that "again" does
not refer to the number of times Jesus rose from the grave, but the
number of times Jesus was **not in the grave**. Jesus was not in the
grave before he was buried, and after he arose, he was out of the
grave **again**.
When the composition rules used by the original author are confusing,
translation necessarily becomes a matter of interpreting and
paraphrasing, and the subject and the object of any particular
sentence may become confused. This is why one cannot understand the
bible with just a dictionary, but one must understand the context of
the story in order to understand the individual sentences.
Many false doctrines have been established on the basis of
misunderstood sentences, because the doctrine makers did not take the
time to understand the greater context first.
