"Try" is a good operative word.
Be careful of what you assume as the route between dots.
Record profits come from willing buyers paying the price at pumps
without reaction. Consider the hot-dog you buy at a sports event... Much
more expensive. Better to bring some trail mix in your pocket.
I drive less and drive slower; that's my reaction. My 32mpg is now
35-36 mpg; just by my voluntary behavior modification. That's my short
term contermeasure to oil company profits. My long-term countermeasure
is to anticipate owning a hybrid, and to participate in the dabate on
developing alternative fuels.
The War in Iraq is a long term strategy to reduce terrorism, but look
at the big picture: "Follow the money" is always a good analysis tool.
Mesopotamia (now Iraq) has been civilized since Biblical times. Why has
it not prospered like Greece and Rome? Apparently there is a defect
extant there in wisdom or philosophy. One thing's for sure, Mohammed did
not help. Since he left his mark, there have indeed been "wars and
rumors of war" in the middle east.
What we see today is the imprint of that attitude multiplied by newly
acquired wealth from the chance presence of oil (called "black gold" in
our times) under their terrain... Thus, with no change in attitude, they
(the middle east population living on top of oil reserves) have
suddenley many times the power to practice their creeds. The creeds have
not changed, but the power to execute then indeed has.
A most recent multiplier is introduced; all communications, both air
transport and telephone (now cell phone) and finally the Internet, have
arrived even there and are mature. Thus, the time to execute the goals
of the creeds are reduced and facilitated. Little wonder that we have
effective terrorists in our midst. One can term the Iraq war as a
knee-jerk reaction to this problem, hardly well thought out. But in my
opinion, this is no reason to deprecate the process and to condemn it as
unusable.
Rather we should resolve "To do Better Today and Tomorrow".
That's the challenge, Russ.

Ever year the demand for oil increases.
China and India are now comsuming larger and larger amounts of oil.
Current comsumption is about 80 - 85 million barrels/day.
America uses most of the worlds oil, they are now threatened by the
increased
demand.
They need to secure their supplies of oil least the Asians screw them.
Personally [as a non-American] I hope the Asians do screw them.

It does not matter. What matters is what is the best way to insure you have
a reliable source of a commodity you need for your own survivial. It
certainly is not going to help if Iraq, joins Iran and Venezuela in using

It makes no difference who uses it, if they want it [they all do] they must

Iraq oil = U.S. dollar reserves. But its better than that. Dollar reserves
are depreciating in value, oil reserves are appreciating in value. Only oil
and foolish Asians now support the U.S. dollar, and the Asians are trying
to get out.

constitution was approved by 78% of almost 10 million Iraqi voters.
At least that many would welcome Saddam back if it would end the
violence and restore the electricity, schools, and clean water.
