Why would the Apostles make Jesus be God, Himself?
Hello,
They didn't. Nowhere did they ever call Jesus, God our Father or
anything like it.
Think about that
for a second. If it wasn't true, it would make their story seem less
credible, not moreso.
In fact, look at history. Is it the tendency for people to take a
logical explanation for things, run to someone else to tell them what
happened and change the story to be less believable? Or, is it normal
for people, seeing a miracle or unbelievable event to then tell others
in the most logical manner possible, in order that they may be
convinced?
Consider that Islam didn't make Mohammed be God but a prophet.
Consider that Buddha is just a man that is a teacher. None of these
other religions took their leader and made them Divine. Why? Simple,
it wouldn't have been accepted. By making the teacher simply another
flawed man, people were more likely to believe in them.
So, the early Christians, at a time of persecution, where many were
running around trying to discredit them and Jesus, are supposed to have
decided to take their leader (under attack for having existed) and make
Him MORE unbelievable? How would that make sense?
On the other hand, if Jesus WERE God, you would have a 2000 year
history of a few holding to the truth, while facing a continual wave of
people trying to make Jesus less Divine and the story more
beliveable...which is exactly what we have seen.
Again, nowhere in the Bible is Jesus ever referred to as Almighty God
or something. Rather, he is referred to as "God's Son" or similar
expressions.
Recall, Jesus cannot be God because God always existed, but Jesus was
created.
God always was- Ps 90:2,
"Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the
world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." (NIV)
Jesus was God's first creation- Col 1:15,
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation."
(NASB)
