Recomendations for quality bible translations |
I currently have the KJV, NKJV, NASB, Holmans, and the NIV (a rat poison
translation according to at least one person ((pastor Dave)).
My computer bible program has room for one more in my translations layout (in
a
way a good thing for the limitation, as then I would find no need to store a
thousand translations, and only look at two!) What would be your
recomendation
for me to add? Of coarse I can only add what is available on
www.laridian.com.
Please check there before mentioning a translations. I cant add what cannot
be installed! I have considered the Living, Amplified,etc.. But I wonder
about
these translations if they are scholarly. Joel Osteen of LakeWood Church
often
uses the Amplified and I highly respect him.
Remember that I am a bible college student that is or will be pursuing either
a
ministry position or a seminary degree. So take this in consideration before
you even mention a translation. Please do not reccommend the Message. Yes I
know that in your church your Youth Pastor and Christian Ed guy uses it, but
I'm sorry to disapoint you, but in my church neither the Youth pastor nor the
Christian Ed pastor use that liberal translation! It has its kick, and no
doubt it reaches some. But remember I am the scholarly type, and no doubt
everyone I teach knows that my top priority is always an increase in good
theology and discernment (somethig lacking in the church today)! John
MacArthur has a ministry of pointing out the problems and lack of discernment
in the church in many of his books. I do not think the Message is a good
translation for quality study. Unfortunately at Y4C I was forced to write a
youth curriculum that used only the Message. Glad I left that ministry..
Godly leaders, but perhaps they have not studied liberal christianity in
detail. John MacArthur could teach them with his books, but they do not like
him.

If you are the 'scholarly type' then you will call no translation 'garbage'.
If you want a good translation, then you might check out "Truth in
Translation: Accuracy and Bias in English Translations of the New Testament"
by Jason BeDuhn. His scholarly credentials are impeccable.

He called my NIV translation Rat poison and then tries to deny it. I

Granted Dave has some problems. I've seen worse though. Dave is about
a 7 or a 6 in the catagory of pain in the butt Usenet posters. I've
seen far more painful people on Usenet than Dave. Check out
rstevew@armory.com. That guy is of the chart.

you'll find this tool helpful in determining the usenet liar.
john in my search which did take 13 seconds total dial up
time as in real life time, I was unable to retrieve where
dave said what you say he said. btw - that search
spanned all news groups and went back to the year 2000.
