Request for people to write or call their congressmen |
A young woman died a couple weeks ago, she died of
alcohol poisoning at a frat party. You might have
seen a report about it in the news. She died because
she was drinking too much, passed out, and died.
You might be thinking, "oh just another dumb kid died".
Nope.
She wasn't the typical person, apparently she was a
homecoming queen, intelligent, nice, popular, and
the town she grew up in is greiving heavily over their
loss.
What I'd like people to consider is, alcohol is a drug,
a legal drug, that is often times abused, and that
can have serious consequences. The young woman that died
had been part of the D.A.R.E program, so you'd expect
that if anyone would know how alcohol could kill someone,
she would be one of the ones to know it. The point to
consider is... there are no warnings on the bottles about
HOW MUCH is dangerous, or when you can know it's dangerous.
I checked the lable of a typical California bottle of wine,
the lable says that it's bad for pregnant women to drink
and that there can be health issues... which in no way conveys
what is normal to drink, nor what could cause someone's death.
If you buy a typical drug at a pharmacist, a legal drug,
they list what is normal, to some level they tell you what
is normal to consume, but they don't on bottles of alcohol.
Why?
Did you know that if you drink to the level of passing
out (which is actually fairly common, this young woman
for instance), you are dangerously close to DYING???
Passing out drunk... can be deadly.
I didn't know that... I only found this out in doing some
quick research on the internet... yet I've been through
high school drug classes in the past that talked about such
stuff. Could it be that the young woman that died 2 weeks
ago, that she didn't know this either?
Probably.
Please, consider writing to your congressmen to ask them
to force alcohol producers to list some nominal max level
that is thought to be safe, put it on the label. My own
choice for text for such a label would say something like:
"Warning: the typical adult male should drink no more than
'X' bottles of this product in 1 hour ('Y' bottles if you
are the normal adult female), or you could die from
alcohol poisoning. If you have drunk enough to pass out,
you are dangerously close to death and should be taken
to a hospital immediately".
Something of that context, that tells people what a maximum
level of drinking is, that warns them what to watch out for.
A text like that on the bottles could have saved that young
womans life. Please write or call your congressman today.
Thanks.

In the U.K., white labels along the lines of "drinking kills" are soon
to be applied to drink bottles just like they are cigarette packs,
much more prominant than the brand logos.
Excellent.
They include:
"Smoking kills"
"Smoking harms you and others around you"
"Smoking leads to a long and painful death"
And the rather obvious and unscary:
"Smoke contains chemicals"
It won't make any difference. Happy now?
A friendly warning about alcohol being able to kill someone if
they pass out... is just that, a warning. It doesn't tell them
they can't drink, or that they shouldn't. It simply tells them
that they can die, or be harmed, hopefully warning them to not
drink enough to pass out. That and that if they're interested in
not having such happen, they should "figure it out, here's the info
such that you're reasonably safe".
If that's what they're doing, it seems fair and reasonable to me.
It's certainly better than not warning them.

It's a point.
But I think the main reason why all "recreational drugs" should be
legal is volume of crime they engender through their illegality where
there is a demand and the unimaginable money that can be made in
dealing them.. I would have thought the US experience with Prohibition
demonstrates that.
The majority of victims of drugs aren't the addicts, but your average
citizen who's mugged, burgled, has their car radio stolen, gets
"accidentally shot" in a drive by or whatever..
Make 'em all legal, fairly taxed and priced, and I expect crime would
fall overnight. And of course, given the tax revenue, we may even be
able to pay for Iraq.

Partly because people think cocaine is "relatively harmless". Alcohol at
least gives you plenty of signs that it's fucking you up.

That college student's death was tragic and it should have not
happened. However, putting a warning label on bottles and cans will
accomplish little to nothing as people that girl's age do not give a
damn in the first place. Trust me, I know. I have seen more than my
share of peers pass out and I am sure many people when they were my
age did, too.

Whoa... You're right!
And did you know that if you jab a fork into your eye, it can lead to

I did some quick stat check. It looks like 7 people die from alcohol
poisoning every year. Which means that if you factor in population
growth, you might see somthing like 250-300 people killed by alcohol
poisoning every year.- now depending on what you think what kind of
people they are- if they are complete loses or average collge
students, the lost lifetime income to society is between 200 million
to 600 million dollars,
Which means that if the cost of these measures over the next 30 year,
be it warning labels or what not, can prevent at least some of these
deaths, they would make sense on a purely financial grounds.

I did a quick search and found that the NCHS reports 317 unintentional
deaths per year, with 1076 deaths when including alcohol poisoning
as an underlying cause:

Your calculations based on "7 people", rather than 317 or 1076
people, might need to be adjusted higher.

what is normal to drink, nor what could cause someone's death.
Count this up as one of the few instances where I agree with you. My
personal feeling is that you're better off mandate the greek system to
take some binge drinking seminars so they can look out for warning
signs.
What ever works best, they should adopt that.
I did a quick search and found that the NCHS reports 317 unintentional
deaths per year, with 1076 deaths when including alcohol poisoning
as an underlying cause:
http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh27-1/110-120.htm
Excuse me, John? You did a "quick search"? How about rephrasing that
as "I clicked on the exact same reference raven1 provided me earlier
today, in a post that I responded to, so it's clear that I saw it"? It
would be a bit more honest.
Oh! I did a simple google search and got the same link you
had already posted, and copy/pasted that link with the
relevant numbers.
There was no dishonesty about it, I hadn't even clicked
on your posted link because I wasn't at the time debating
alcohol deaths. When "7 people" was mentioned, I thought
that looked pretty and looked it up, obviously getting
the same link you gave. That's probably just Google's
preference for what link would cover said search terms.

Boatwright,
Consider this,
You have spent a lot of time posting messages to newsgroups about
this subject. How about taking some of this time and write letters to
the companies that manufacture alcoholic beverages? Many producers of
alcoholic beverages have already voluntarily promoted the idea that
people should drink responsibly. State your concerns and make some
reasonable suggestions. You never know, they may agree with you.

Steve,
Put down your sword for a minute and realize, a young woman,
an intelligent young woman that many people loved and cared
about... died... she apparently didn't know that she'd been
drinking too much and passed out... and died.
All I'm asking, is for people to consider having the labels
include some modest amount of information about HOW MUCH
of whatever alcohol is in the bottles, HOW MUCH can kill
you to be listed on the bottles.
That's all.
Apparently Australia is way ahead of both the USA and the UK.
We are behind, they are ahead of us. We need to catch up.
It's importanty Steve, drop your sword and think it over.
We need to find out what Australia's been doing, and we
need to fix our labeling such that people are less likely
to do stuff that can KILL them, without them knowing they'd
end up dead.
Sure... attack away... whatever... but gosh Steve, what if
it was your daughter that died... wouldn't you have wanted
someone to have dropped all the crud, just long enough to fix
the broken stuff, so your daughter wouldn't have died?
???
That's all I'm asking Steve.
Think about it Steve... think it over.

There is not ONE word of text on the bottles saying how much
is OK... not even one word. There are all kinds of text on
other legal drugs saying how much is OK.

She probably didn't know if she passed out, that she's dangerously
close to death... which is the point of all this... tell people
on the bottle's label, that they can die if they pass out.
It's very common for people to drink to the point of passing out.
Hence, it seems like it would be good to warn them NOT to do that.

To see someone like her dying and all the people around
her being affected so deeply over their loss, just kinda
makes me wonder why no one cared enough to warn her, and
others, such that they might not have made those decisions
in the first place. Finding out that there is NO TEXT
on the bottles warning them that a common thing people
do... is DEADLY... that just kinda makes it discussion
point, where hopefully, congress can do something similar
to what Australia has already done... or whatever works
to warn people sufficiently.

We should also affix warning labels to all automobiles, giving the
speed at which the cars can kill people. How fast is fatal?

All I'm asking for, is people to be realistic about it,
put information about how someone if they exceed some
level... they can die from it. That one of the indicators
is that if you're passing out... you're dangerously close
to death. That isn't on the bottles, and it should be,
else you'll keep seeing people dying from drinking too
